However, the party won control back in 2023, following redistricting in late 2021. “Tonight, Virginians sent a clear message across the nation: Donald Trump and Virginia Republicans’ politics of chaos and cruelty have no home in the Commonwealth,” House Speaker Don Scott of Portsmouth said in a statement. “House Democrats expanded our majority because we stood up for Virginians and built a vision that puts people first — lowering costs, growing our economy and protecting our rights."

I'm happy that Spanberger won in Virginia (the only state experiencing a flip from recent GOP leadership). So far, only five counties have shifted toward the Republicans from 2024 and most have moved dramatically toward the Democrats. That said, I'm cautious about reading too much into anything tonight. Democrats have turned out for off-year elections at a much higher rate during the Trump eras. Trump brought low-information bloc into the GOP fold last year and they're not voting in off-year gubernatorial races.
