Until we clearly have a path financially for additional guys, I’m going to block the free bird / help / incomplete roster construction noises.

And also any chatter that involving our signed guys during the offseason is not worth spending brain power now until at least early December because NONE of them are trade-eligible until then. So many things can change in a week, let alone two full bloody months.

We really need it tbh. What kind of player is available who we could get for that money?

Nobody, unless we waive someone or trade someone with no money back. We are hardcapped at the 1st apron, and we are closer to that amount than a minimum salary

    Still can’t use it.

What @CarlosGM said. They’d have to trade someone and take no money back.

Houston has an open roster spot and will likely file for a $12.5 million disabled player exception. If the NBA determines VanVleet is out until mid-June, the league would grant the exception, which would normally allow Houston to sign or trade for a player on a one-year contract.

However, even if the exception is granted, Houston would not be allowed to sign a player into that exception at the moment, because it is just $1.25 million below the first apron. The moves Houston made this offseason hard capped the team at that level.

The Rockets could make a trade to fill VanVleet's absence.

However, what the Rockets lack is tradeable contracts.

The eight players Houston signed this summer -- VanVleet, Steven Adams, Finney-Smith, Holiday, Jae'Sean Tate, Jeff Green, Josh Okogie and Capela -- cannot be traded until mid-December. Holiday and Tate have the right to approve any trade.

Meanwhile, Smith signed a rookie extension and has a poison pill restriction. It has been nearly 17 years since a player with a poison pill restriction has been traded.

With nine players off the board, the only players left Houston could trade are starters Durant, Sengun and Thompson and reserves Sheppard and Eason. The two reserves make a combined $16.3 million.

Seems like a pointless thing, what's the point of a 12 mil exception that doesn't give you a 12 million exception to anything?

Yeah, as we've said over and over again, it doesn't really make sense to make a trade before December 15th. Even if you're onboard to trade Reed + Tari for a guard, I would personally still say "wait a month and a half". I'd like to give Reed a chance to prove himself and Tari a chance to prove he's 100% healthy.

Giving yourself the option for later in the season when guys we signed contracts to this offseason can be traded or if we decide to trade Tari.

I think the point is to have ALL options available to you. No reason not to take it and then look back and say "Sht!! If we had just done that we could to this now."

But where does the 12mil come in if we still have to stay under the same number with those contracts? Genuinely sounds like it does nothing.

So we can't sign someone like Patrick Beverly for this injury exception?

No. We can't sign anybody. There isn't enough cap room between us and the apron. One would have to presume they are filing for that disability exception on the off chance that they end up making a trade in which they take back less salary than they send out.

Yeah it really seems that it does nothing if you are hard capped by the apron.

The trading scenarios would be the same with or without the exception.
