That's kinda my point though I guess. Reed should be moved whilst he still has value because we DESPERATELY need somebody to handle the ball. We've gone from Amen and Jalen when FVV's out to Amen and worse than Jalen. That's a bad look, that's kinda the entire point of what I'm saying. I wouldn't waste the time on Reed, and with how Tari's attitude's looking I'm not that opposed to throwing him in either if that could net us a legitimate primary ball handler.
I don't agree, he's never been as good as Jalen Green at any point in their careers so far (not even close if you look at their rankings coming out of school tbh) why would you believe he could be now when he's gone from "generational shooter" to "less efficient than Jalen 'Big Ol Bust' Green?" We need actually contender worthy players, Reed's an odd man out for sure.
Reed got massively outplayed by Ajay Mitchell who was also taken in the same draft but in the 2nd round and only played 36 games last season.
It's not like we'll be playing OKC overnight. He'll do fine against 75% of the teams in the league and there are like 3 or 4 that will make his look great. Hopefully he learns things in those games to make him usable against the top teams.
If we wanted great against 75% of teams we actually should've kept Jalen, he's exactly perfectly suited to be good against only 75% of teams, and he does that much better than Reed ever could or would. We didn't keep him because that's not good enough, so let's not keep flogging that dead horse method and instead trade him for a good player.
Jalen is trash bro I dont even want to talk about that guy anymore. He's gone let's be happy and move on. Jalen wasn't better against trash teams. He was good like 20% of the time. Good or bad opponent, it didn't matter. His performance was based on the alignment of the stars or some ****, it was just completely random. I'm not saying Reed is good enough. I'm saying let him practice a bit against the trash teams and see if he gets better before throwing him out. An OKC game isn't exactly the best way to debut his improvement.
Well it comes down to how confident that the Rockets are that Sheppard will improve compared to what his trade value is......... I don't think it is close to written in stone that this is what Reed will be going forward, but I also admit I would trade him for the right guard in return, the problem is that I don't think that deal is out there. As for Tari - the Rockets knew he was an emotional guy and that for at least awhile, his contract situation would impact his play on the court. I don't know what the offers around the league were for Tari so it is hard for me to say much.
Actually he pretty much was exactly just good against 75% of teams. You're misremembering because it's easy to descend into hyperbole. He still scored WAY more games over 20 than under. Reed genuinely doesn't come close. But I agree, Jalen sucks, let's now use the other bust to get a player who can actually help us win a chip instead of making the same mistake with the midget version who won't net us a KD on a get out of jail free card.
Trust me, I've been leading the "trade for Trae or Lamelo" bandwagon since summer but we can't trade FVV's contract till mid December anyway so we might as well see if Reed can learn to dribble. If he can dribble then he's a fine roleplayer.
Reed will continue to get his opportunities moving forward. I don't think Ime won't expect starter level of production from him by the end of this season, including POs. Considering all the factors, that'd be a very big ask. We need him to become serviceable within the minutes he gets. That's it. Same role (maybe a bit more minutes) as if FVV didn't go down. Plan A to mitigate FVV's absence isn't Reed. That's not fair for him or the organization.
only time Reed has looked like he can actually play is when the games don’t matter like Summer League/G-League/preseason or when there’s zero pressure like the game against OKC last season where we sat all the starters and basically punted the game before it began
Best way to learn to beat your man to the spot is to take charges. Something that Fred does really well. Reed out there playing the trail technique waiting to punch the ball out.
I was just addressing some of the issues with his vertical because that is what his supporters try to justify the physical aspect that stands out. He is a leaper, yes, but overall, dunking has not been a big part of PG's game in the past and it continues to be not being a big part. McClung almost finding no place in the NBA despite his otherworldly jumping abilities. I just do not see the physical specimen that other players are in that 'Draft Range', yes, Jabari is also not super fast or athletic but he is close to a 7 footer and has good enough wingspan to make a difference on Defense with his versatility. He can only surprise with his IQ and his 'slightly above average NBA level skillset' but that is little not enough right now.
He genuinely looks like an end of bench late 2nd round pick and we're paying him $10mil. We could use that salary to get a real player.
Because there wasn't a franchise player in the draft? Not all top 3 picks are destined to be franchise players, lets not just make up stuff now...... And we did sign a veteran role player who had a major ACL injury.... And maybe he is telling the truth on his evaluation and maybe he is just using GM speak to make himself look better. Derrick White was drafted in 2017 which had Tatum, Fox, Donovan Mitchell, Markkanen, and Bam.... In a redraft he would be probably top 10. Perhaps the draft consensus on Reed will end up being wrong, but I wouldn't be so stupid to assume so based on the games played.
I’m still gonna give him time, but I’m sick of all the coddling and pretending that he hasn’t been ass this entire time he’ll go 3-10 and get abused defensively but have a block and a steal, and people will be on here like “I thought Reed played well tonight. I liked his hustle. Not worried about Reed at all.”
Yeah, Reed seems to give a lot of space, let the ballhandler come to him, and then tries to corral them after they already have a head full of steam. This is why he ends up a half or full step behind and then tries to sneak back in and swipe. When you're a small guard, you have to get up into the ballhandler early, make them uncomfortable, and force them somewhere with intention. It's the NBA, players are going to get past you eventually, but you have to at least delay them and then funnel them toward help. Simply letting the offensive player dictate everything while you try to read and react to their every move is going to get your ass burned 9 times out of 10. Another big thing is his screen navigation. He has to start anticipating them better and get his hip/leg around the screen setter early instead of simply running into them with his shoulder.
Is it constructive to use a one game sample size? Is constructive to just expect Reed to fill FVV's role with the starters? And we were a championship roster when we had FVV.... there are reasons why our odds went down after the injury.
What he tries to do is difficult developing everything.....if he followed JJ Redick....then all he had to do is Off Ball Movement and Shooting. And 100% gets a job anywhere in the NBA as a movement shooter like Kyle Korver and Redick. Although Redick was 6'3-6'4 and Korv was 6'7. Perfection in their only Craft.
You are making a lot of assumptions for a position/size that takes longer to develop. I think you and others are just ready to give up without good cause. We have other options on the bench and a war chest of assets so the situation isn't as dire. Like @Nook said, trade Reed for the right player but his outcome is not set in stone. He could very well develop into a great rotation player, but I would at least keep an open mind through the trade deadline.
