This. Our ceiling does not change with FVV. Our floor gets higher and our ceiling gets lower. We lose in the 4Q last night with FVV because he chucks a 3 instead of Amen abusing the Thunder's slower players. But he wouldve had 18 pts on 16 shots with 0 T.O.s.
Yes, we need more help. FVV getting hurt killed our backcourt depth which was already light. It is what it is and if Reed can’t miraculously become a competent rotation piece before too long, we will make a move before the deadline. The question is, who will be available for a reasonable price? We don’t need a superstar, we already have 1 and 2 more budding superstars. We just need a 3 & D shooting guard and Ime being patient and not going ballistic over turnovers.
people heal from ACL's a lot quicker these days and he's already a month post-surgery. honestly could be back for a bench role in the playoffs.
Did people forget how lost we looked with Amen and Green trying to play point guard for that stretch of games with FVV injured, literally looked like headless chickens. The issue isn't FVV, the issue is we don't have an backup pg to fill his spot who can dribbe without turning the ball over like baffoons
The issue is we are still trying to figure out offense with a super young team. Durant isn't a WB or Harden who can run an offense all game. Sengun and Amen might be able to with some more time and experience. We are trying to figure out rotations and what works.
Yeah, it's not so much they miss FVV - They miss any competent PG getting the ball up the court and across the timeline in an orderly & timely fashion, then getting the team into it's offensive set. That last turnover by Sheppard in the 2nd overtime - I was thinking to myself "Don't pick up your dribble", and that's exactly what Reed did, and it cost them the game. An experienced point guard doesn't do that, especially against a defense that was extended as far as OKC was, well beyond the 3 point line. Saying that, I still think Sheppard will grow into the role ... but with only Reed & Amen as point guards, (I don't count Holiday) they still need a depth piece to soak up minutes over the course of an 82 game season.
Agree completely - it's not about FVV at all. It's about any competent PG .... just someone to get the ball up the court, and into the offensive sets without turning it over, and maybe once in a while running a pick and roll set with Sengun.
this is kind of where I am at as well. We would be better from the jump with Fred, but his injury is going to expedite our long-term growth. Personally, I think we need to trade him, Capela and likely Eason And a draft pic at some point. We should be able to bring in a player around $35-$40 million in value. If we really think we’re close to a title, we can include Shepp and that number up to what should be near max. If Adams Sengun Smith/DFS KD Amen are healthy as a six man core we can make all sorts of moves to upgrade. Capela Is a luxury but can easily be replaced with a free agent or even just with Jabari playing at center. Reed I still think we’ll develop into a very nice NBA player, but that may not be enough for us during the Durant era. Tari, I love his character, but I was reminded last night that he just Isn’t a great fit. He just tries too hard to score in lieu of making a better basketball player on the offensive end. If I knew FVV Would it be back with 10 or 15 games to go in the regular season? I would be elated because I think he would be a great backup point guard. That seems unlikely and I think that since we’re paying him 25 million to do nothing he would be willing to opt into his contract and go wherever we can send him. Not saying that he has trade value, but I think that we could offset any negativity and I still think that with the right organization he would be great next year. Heck, even if he stays with us, he should be a very good backup next year. My dream scenario if Clippers **** out. FVV+Holiday+Okogie+Capela+Eason For Harden, Beal and CP3. Tillman begs CP3 for forgiveness Sengun/Adams Smith/DFS Durant/DFS Amen/Beal Harden/CP3
I think the move is just holding till the deadline. 1. tanking teams will be jettisoning talent and will only want assets back. Tari is a valuable piece for a rebuilding team. 2. they will also be releasing vet players who want out. So we just have to be patient. We'll also know a lot more about our team and I really don't think we'll be in trouble during the regular season. It's over the duration of a 7 game series that I worry about missing Fred and a true point.
Stone has always been an offseason dealer, so he rarely did moves at the deadline..... which he is forced to do now with a Win now concept. I think going from very good to all time great is very difficult to achieve.
I'd say it isn't easy getting competent PGs, and it costs resources, whether that be exceptions, payroll, playing time. Sure there are other competent PGs out there, but FVV was the one that didn't cost the Rockets an exception or draft picks. If the Rockets struggle because of PG play, it will be because FVV got hurt. I really like this team so they may make things work without him. I just think he would have made things easier for Amen, Durant, and Sengun.
I wish Fred the best and a speedy recovery but after one game, it's hard to say we "miss" him. Reed and Amen need these minutes to improve. If we actually have a title in the next 3 years, it's not because we rode Fred and KD to a chip - those guys will need be able to support our young guys who actually put in the hardest work to get us there. Amen needs to be a star to get us there. Sengun needs to be a star to get us there. Reed needs to go from a promising shooter to an actually reliable shooter in game AND he needs to figure out ways to win a handful of defensive matchups a game to limit the defensive liability problem he brings. Those are the things that will get us a title - riding guys like KD and Fred on the wrong side of 30 are NOT how we get to the promised land.
