Certainly should be part of it. But I have no idea what Tari is demanding.

No max-level rookie has taken a discount, except for arguably Sengun. If Amen continues his upward momentum, you max him, period.

LIke I said, it's a touchy subject. I need more data to be personally convinced, but I'm also not here to convince others.

I think Amen might just follow Alpi's lead.

There are just too many potential complications when you try to underpay an obvious young, max player. I remember Boston fans sweating over potentially losing Brown because he signed for under the max his first extension.

Now, this is of course assuming Amen establishes himself as our franchise player. If he doesn’t take the next step, that’s a different conversation. But if he continues to progress as I expect, you pay him the max and don’t think twice.

By the way, this entire conversation focuses just on Amen's eventual max contract. I wouldn't be surprised if he eventually hit supermax escalators.

Amen is on a trajectory to achieve supermax criteria, though. Alpi wasn’t really. That means Amen has much higher incentive to demand a max, ie he legit could get more than 25% cap.

I’m completely fine if an extension cannot be reached. For one, and most importantly, his health is a big risk long term. And when he does play, he often makes boneheaded plays despite wowing you from time to time.

Let him hit RFA next year and let the market decide his value. And we have one more year to see if his legs can hold up.

I think folks are too attached to our own draftees, aka the Core X players

Exactly, especially since DPOY is a supermax escalator. Amen would be foolish to demand anything less than the max with escalators if he continues to improve.

    Tic toc.

This could be a game changer. An overpay could hurt as much as letting one get away.

While it would be nice to extend Tari, if it doesn’t get done, Stone had his priorities straight. Extending Jabari was 100% the more important move. You don’t go over the apron for Tari.

Future flexibility and prioritizing Amen mean more than Tari. Tari is the most replaceable. Not saying losing him won’t sting, but it’s a sound decision.

DPOY will be competitive, but I fully expect him to make All-NBA in yr 4, if this improvement continues. Making any team qualifies too

but stone does have flexibility. The designated rookie contract doesn’t have to provide for 30% based on any criteria. The reward can be tiered anywhere between 25%-30%, and different for different criteria. Like All-NBA 1st team could be 30%, and lower for 2nd, 3rd team…as an example. That’s what Franz got.

We were lucky Sengun took a discount. We can't expect everyone else to do the same. I'm sure Stone will try to convince Amen to take a discount too. If Amen agrees then great. If he doesn't, it's probably not best to force our hottest prospect in decades to test restricted free agency. Even if we match any contract he gets that will sour the relationship.

Well, anything that happens to Tari now is his own damn fault for being an adult who got their mom involved in contract negotiations.

There's basically no chance he finishes this season with the Rockets now.
