Surprised no thread had been started on this. For those not familiar with Houston Montrose is known and is the LGBT part of town.

A rainbow painted cross walk has been ordered by the Republican state officials and reluctantly backed by Houston's Democratic mayor to be removed.

Trump has threatened states with losing highway funding if any political messages are painted on roadways

    Public roadways breh
You can paint the parking lot rainbow cause it’s private

Public money is needed for more important road things like the roads themselves
    H-town got potholes breh

Les would have painted the roads red when Yao was here but it’s a public road

Montrose can paint everything else like Care Bears if it’s private property

If that was the reason, they wouldn't have spent money removing it twice. You save the most money by leaving the crosswalks as-is.

This is just some municipally-funded art, much like a mural on a city building or a statue of a confederate hero on public land. There is nothing about a public roadway that is different from any other public space. What about the little murals we've painted on the signal controller cabinets all over the city? Do they have to go too?

You could potential slip and slide into a butthole as you're crossing that street.
As you know it's the 2nd most used crosswalk in the world, 1st being Shibuya crossing in Japan.

    @Salvy
    @El_Conquistador
You aren’t gonna paint the stop sign rainbow
    Or makes the lights rainbow
    That wouldn’t fit the standards

We all know montrose is rainbow breh
Nobody is painting the 5th ward a certain color
    Breh!

The relevant regulations are county level. But it was the US Department of Transportation that ordered state governments to review these crosswalks for removal, though they don't have authority over those roads. And then it was Greg Abbott who ordered the removal of the crosswalk and forced Harris County to comply. "Regulations" is not an argument. The regulations had said the crosswalk was fine until Trump stuck his nose in it because he is still pissed off that Washington DC painted a humongous Black Lives Matter in front of the White House.

You wouldn't -- and we don't -- paint a stop sign rainbow. It'd probably be unsafe. But, the studies conducted on rainbow crosswalks have found that these crosswalks increase awareness of pedestrians and reduce accidents. So that's not the reason at all. We should probably do more of these painted crosswalks in dangerous pedestrian areas. Heck, we can do some of those Blue Lives Matter flags and it'd probably work just as well. Or maybe solid red with a giant MAGA written in white across it.

Most dictators try to repress art and culture because it inspires independent thought. Independent thought is the enemy of any dictatorship.

Also stupid people don't usually appreciate art or culture because they're usually too stupid to get it.

Public roadways should not be used as billboards, regardless who funds it. People shouldn't b**** and complain if its restored, regardless of cost. I don't want to see a crosswalk with a Christian Cross any more than I want to see other propaganda. So glad this is finally being stopped.

The country worked decades to removed Christian fascism. Now its time to remove this liberal fascism from public property.

I am 100% certain you would not be ok with art that you disagreed with.

Nobody is trying to repress fascist liberal art. You can go buy a billboard like everyone else.

Wow, you couldn't be more wrong on this. Agreeing with art isn't the point of art at all.

Anyway, back to the practicality of all this. The argument that the rainbows are being removed because they're distracting to drivers is absurd. Crosswalks are supposed to be distracting so you actually slow down and don't run over anybody. And if all this is because of money, why is so much being spent to remove them?

It's almost as if there is some other ulterior motive..................................................................

And Texas is still Texas. We don't need them to tear up crosswalks to know they don't tolerate queers.

There is a ton of public art, and some of it I don't agree with. I was glad to see local communities choosing to take down confederate monuments that no longer represent them. Trump tried to tell us they were sacrosanct. I was not so happy with protesters who took it on themselves to deface confederate monuments because they didn't want to go through the process to make an orderly decision. But this one errs the other way. Instead of protesters circumventing governance, Trump is hijacking governance.

you are confusing Houston with Gaza
You can’t have LGBT businesses thrive there
Houston is good for everyone and the streets should be the same everywhere with painted lanes and some stop signs and signals

    roads are for cars breh
    Cars don’t identify as queer

Why does it seem the "culture war" is one-sided?
That side just seems to go out of its way to harrass the other side.

The cross walk doesn’t have to look gay for gay people to use it
Like there’s no gay cross walk to Toyota center gay people can walk on it with no problems

they don’t have to be afraid of being jumped by thugs in maga hats like Jussie did at subway in Chicago at 3 am in the middle of winter

    Honestly.
If the government paid for it .. . i would not be happy
The government paying for it to be removed . .. i am not happy

If this was paid for by some third party and does not disrupt traffic
    I really don't care

Goverment wasting our money is different than some private group doing it
