agreed. If he’s resting on B2Bs then it could be a long term problem. I chalked up the rest last yr to caution with the recovering/healing process from the injury. I figure it was major major surgery if they had to put a rod into his shin. But 2 yrs removed if they are still resting him on B2Bs that’s a real problem. I really hope he’s over that freak injury.
Big wing with giant wingspan is just inherently more valuable than a 2 guard unless that 2 guard is a #1 type option.
I think a lot of Clyde getting his jersey retired here was Phi Slama Jama and how he was a Houstonian. He was a long-time Houstonian who grew up here and went to, arguably part of one of the most cult-like runs the city of Houston had had up until that point (maybe even after). The entire city was hyped about Phi Slama Jama. It'd be interesting to see if Durant would get his jersey retired here if they won a couple of championships, but I'm guessing they may just do it if for no other reason than doing something good for a legend/vet and treating a player well. It may depend on how well he does in the playoffs, his stats, etc. But then, that's all a fantasy at the moment. lol.
I expect we sign both but I believe they’re holding on to KD resign due to Tari and Front office will do much as possible to lower Tari’s contract since if he is over priced it will be difficult to trade him. If Tari can agree around $17 mil per year, he will be hot trade piece down the road but anything over $20mil will hinder his trade value and might have to keep him for that contract.
Taris contract should have some restrictions and last year team option. Dude can fall over and Lance McCullers for the next 3 years.
A little overly reductive IMO? Conceptually I agree (i.e. all else being exactly equal) but I think it's very possible for some roleplayer shooting guards to be better than some roleplayer forwards or whatever. To refer back to an earlier comparison from this thread, I'll take a guy like Desmond Bane or Mikal Bridges over Jonathan Kuminga any day. I think Quentin Grimes also has shown the possibility of perhaps becoming good enough to be a #2 option. Probably not a #1 though
Some roles are most important than others. Sure, a good role player is better than a bad one. But if we are comparing similar levels of talent, I’m going to value a guy who absolutely can change games defensively along with hitting threes and attacking the basket, over a smaller guy who doesn’t bring that dynamic factor on either end. And Des Bane is this close to a star level player. I think he’s a legit possibility to make an All Star team in Orlando. Kuminga can’t even get off the bench sometimes for Golden State. Not comparable players.
I guess what I'm saying is that I think Grimes might be more talented than Tari, but in a less-valuable role, so on the balance they are in the same ballpark of value.
I hear they have 70 million to split between the two of them for 2026-2027. So have them do a one on one with 1’s and 2’s make it take it and the game ends at a combined score of 70. Whatever the score is that’s how they split the 70M.
The apron mechanics have changed how teams spend - Finally something that works to rein in the big spenders. I haven't looked at the actual cap space available for next offseason, because it's so far away but I do expect teams to continue avoiding the 2A and many teams being capped at the 1A just because of how the mechanics work - hard capped if you perform specific actions. This has limited the total amount of $$ available to players and created some bargain situations for teams who are able to sign players for much less than their perceived market value - Okogie falls into that category for the Rockets. He's worth more than the minimum, there just aren't any teams who have $$$ to offer him. As for Tari, I could see it playing out much like Grimes who signed a 1 year deal for what appears to be a lowball amount ($8.7m), retaining his bird rights with Philly and becoming an unrestricted free agent next offseason. They'll either be forced to pay him or he likely ends up delt in a sign and trade (which hard caps the receiving team at the 1A).
Bontempts apparently predicted we are going to extend Tari at around 4/80. I’d be okay with that. Higher average per season than I’d like in exchange for one fewer year.
Miami retired Shaq’s, for one ring as a side piece. And it was the team’s first jersey retired, too … lulz … the really should have made Alonzo the first.
I think Tari is somewhere between your first and second group (if his health is not a concern). He is a role player alright and he's not a high end starter due to the unique (or weird) skillset he has. He brings things to the table you can't find in those other role players. I agree that his game is more suitable to the sixth man role even though he is better than a lot of starters in the league. This is why it's difficult to judge his value in terms of contract size.
I think the first jersey to be retired by the Heat was Michael Jordan's (lol... still can't believe that). Outside of that, I think Zo's number was the first to be retired. They also retired Dan Marino's number, but I'm not sure when that was done. "Heat Culture".
It was more than caution. Recovery from that type of surgery is up to 12-18 months (i.e., he was not healed last season). If the Rockets have to rest him this season, it was because they weren't cautious enough last season. I think we are in the 18-month range. I'm a little concerned that they overdid it, and he may need rest on B2Bs early in the season. Last season was typical, recovery stuff from that type of injury, and long term, there just is not precedent for this type of injury to be long term (except on the foot, which is a several orders of magnitude stress difference than the tibia).
KD’s extension has changed my thinking on Tari a little. I don’t want to break the bank, but Bontemps’s prediction of 4/80 is sounding better and better.
I think Tari gets extended but it's going to have to come with some considerations like team options etc in case he stays injury prone.
