I guess if Houston were able to offload 75% of Walker’s contract they could technically afford Alonso. But it really doesn’t make sense and seems like pure idiocy for Houston to give another big contract to a 1B in his 30s after having 2 in a row go bad on them. But Paredes-Alvarez-Alonso-Correa-Altuve-Pena is a pretty good start on a contending lineup.

Next season this will be your post:

I guess if Houston were able to offload 75% of Alonso's’s contract they could technically afford Yandy Diaz. I rather have Bregman back over Alonso. Some positional flexibility.

Exactly. We just offloaded JAbreu's contract and now people want us to go back into debt

Seems like people who should know things are convinced we are going to ink a certain elder statesman pitcher. It sure would be nice to have a little depth in that department.

Signed a starter named Nate Pearson? One year 1.35M

Pearson is a former 1st-round pick of the Blue Jays with a big fastball. Interesting that he'll be working as a starter again; the vast majority of his MLB work has been in relief.

Could be a great signing. 97th percentile velo. So he’s got stuff to work with. But he seems like he might be a lot like Whitley. They must really like him to give him a guaranteed deal considering he cannot be optioned.

He'll dazzle his first few starts next season after the Astros pitching lab works with him, then he'll need TJ and be out until 2028.

if he can’t start competently, turn him into a leverage arm. It’s not like we got a ton of those running around.

He was a pretty durable effective RP over 23-24. At $1.35M it won’t take much at all for him to provide surplus value.

Not an earth-shaker, but this is a zero-risk move. Why not?

The main downside is that because it’s a big league deal, he takes a 40 man roster spot all offseason and if it doesn’t work out it’ll be more dead money, but it’s such a small amount it’s not a significant risk.
