I remember that headline in the Houston Chronicle after they blew a 20-point 4th quarter lead to the Suns at home. I think Choke City then morphed into Clutch City after game 7. Sheila Jackson-Lee tried Champ City after they beat the Knicks in the Finals but it didn't stick.
I guess if you ask 100 random people who happen to live in Houston and are a certain age, you might get 100 that connected H-town and Houston, but I doubt it would be 100%. If you asked 100 random people from around the country, you would not get anywhere close to that number. It is not an association made in most places, outside of maybe some music communities. You've got The Windy City, The Big Apple, Sin City, The Big Easy, Motor City, Music City, The City of Angels, and... H-town? Please. Across the country more people would associate Space City with Houston than they would H-town. The other thing is that "H-town" diminishes Houston. Note those other famous city nicknames--all include "city" or "big." A town is a small place that lacks energy and vibrancy. As for Clutch City, I agree that it would be mostly basketball fans who see the connection, but if I recall, the Rockets are a basketball team and their fans are basketball fans.
O RLY? Which Houston? Houston, AK Houston, AL Houston, AR Houston, DE Houston, MN Houston, MO Houston, MS Houston, OH Houston, PA Houston, TX None of those other H cities like Hurst or Honolulu refer to themselves as H-town. Further, Sacramento has Sactown, (Atlanta has A-town & many others ATL etc). Dallas has D-town & many others like Big D. So H-town, The-H, Big H, H-City, H, Space City, Bayou City, Clutch City, Houston, who cares? Dafuq
Did not expect people feeling we need to “earn” Clutch City again. So it’s seriously not a nickname for Houston anymore in Rockets’ fans eyes?!!!
"H-Town" existed before "Clutch City" from what I recall. Houston was named after Sam Houston. The Houston surname supposedly comes from "Hugh's town". So yeah, H-Town. lol.
You don't know there are other cities named Houston out there right? You can have the same argument about "what city does Htown" refer to doing that, but at the end of the day most everyone outside of Houston knows Htown refers to Houston. It has been promoted out the ass. I dont think Huntsville or Harrisburg have the same budget.
I think you actually do have a point here. I'm not even American and I just read those names out to a bunch of other British people (and a couple of Nigerians) and all of us knew every single one of them until H-town (I also tried Clutch City to be fair and got the same result) and then it was just me. A lot of those names really are that iconic, 1 of the 6 of us didn't know Sin City, but the rest we got perfect.
Literally just Dunkstronaut with championship ketchup and mustard and we'd go from weak ass vampire team to best branding in the league.
