Does anybody remember when the simple revelation that Nixon KEPT a list of his enemies was enough to traumatize the nation? "The Enemies list" was still in the public psyche right up until he kicked the bucket - after Watergate it was probably the #1 thing people were outraged about when discussing Nixon after Watergate - using the office to settle personal feuds - and he never did anything like Trump's done with James - possibly something in private that nobody knew about, but definitely not out in public for everybody to see without any shame like Trump.

Sure. Which probably explains why prosecutors most of the time feel heat for bringing cases they can't win. If we did that all the time, the system would stop working altogether. A couple of one-offs isn't going to break the system. Here, they bring a likely specious case. Leticia James will suffer expense, bureaucracy and official harassment for awhile (aside-- we've done much worse to others in our judicial system). Maybe at the end, she can sue for prosecutorial misconduct and get a payday. Or not. But, imo the answer is not that you can't bring indictments in politically-charged cases. If that were so, we would never be able to charge a crooked president.

 

IMO trump doesn't care if there is a conviction, he just wants the perp walk and the headache there going to have to go through, the tweet tramp sent to Pam to get these folks will come back to bite him along with the attacks over the past few years

 

Of course you can bring indictments, and at times should. Historically we've probably been too far lenient, but this is a bad indictment on multiple fronts.

There is a legitimate case against the Fed Governor, just a hard one to prove beyond reasonable doubt and never prosecuted because of it.
There is a legitimate case against Comey, but the same thing.

There is zero question, the DOJ is no longer even the slightest bit independent.

Pretty interesting. Nakia Thompson was on probation with a suspended sentence for a conviction in 2011 for a class 2 misdemeanor assault and battery. Record.

She was declared an Absconder on September 9. Leticia James was indicted on October 9. My guess is that while they were trying to prepare a case against James Nakia Thompson showed up and they found a technicality they could leverage to embarrass Leticia James with by labeling Thompson an Absconder. AI tells me that probation in NC is usually 5 years, but there can be resets or extensions, which must have been applied to Thompson along the way for nonpolitical reasons. But it seems like both Thompson and North Carolina both decided that keeping up the probation routine 10 years after the conviction wasn't worth bothering with (there were reductions in requirements during the Covid years). So, in 2020 James buys this house and presumably Thompson moves into it then. North Carolina doesn't object for over 4 years. And then someone calls from the DOJ to tell them they have someone on probation who left the state. So they throw on an Absconder label.

Honestly, someone who got a suspended sentence for a misdemeanor in 2011 should not still have probation requirements in 2025. That's ridiculous. Maybe there were administrative hoops she should have jumped through to get it cleared up. Shame on Aunt Leticia for not bringing her legal expertise to bear for Thompson's case. But social media wants to make out like Nakia Thompson is some desperado on the run and hiding in this safehouse protected by her corrupt family, and that doesn't seem to bear out. More like someone who was maybe out of control in her youth and got busted, but now it is 14 years later and she has not re-offended and is just trying to scrape out an existence with family support.

As for Cayla Hairston, I don't think I can link directly, but you can search her name here and find her 3 indictments: Virginia Judiciary Online Case Information System. On the 2024 larceny (which started as a felony but was changed to a misdemeanor), she was convicted and given unsupervised probation for 12 months. Details are scant. Her charges on illegal possession of a firearm are actually from before the larceny and I don't understand how that case was concluded -- or maybe it is ongoing. In any case, her probation on the larceny probably ended at the end of August. And anyway, for a mugshot she's looking pretty hot.
