Is Yang Hansen the next Yao Ming? Will he be better or worse? Will he be able to stay in the league for 8+ seasons like Yao or no?

Yao Ming played in the NBA for eight seasons, from 2002 to 2011. He was drafted first (1st) overall by the Houston Rockets in the 2002 draft and retired due to chronic injuries. During his career, he was an eight-time All-Star and a five-time All-NBA selection.

Yang Hansen became only the 4th player ever to jump straight from the Chinese Basketball Association to the NBA, joining:

    •Yao Ming (2002)
    •Yi Jianlian (2007)
    •Emmanuel Mudiay (2015)
    •Yang Hansen (2025)

Yang Hansen is just the 8th Chinese player to ever make it to the NBA at all.

    • Yao Ming:
A Hall of Famer who played for the Houston Rockets, known for his height, skill, and being a pioneer for Chinese players in the NBA.

    • Yang Hansen:
A rookie drafted 16th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2025, who is being compared to Yao Ming (drafted 1st overall in 2002) due to his Chinese heritage and position as a center.

    • Similarities:
Both are dominant big men from China who are considered major prospects for the league.

    • Differences:
Yao Ming is much taller (7'6") and has a distinguished NBA career, while Hansen is 7'1" and is just beginning his career. Their play styles also differ, with Hansen having playmaking abilities compared to a more traditional post-up style for Yao.

    • Context:
Yao Ming's impact helped open the door for future Chinese players like Yang Hansen to enter the league. Many fans and analysts see Hansen as a potential successor to Ming as the face of Chinese basketball in the NBA.

Dude, with all respect but use my thread, just to save resources instead of opening up a new one when there is already one.

i wish Yao had stayed lean. We needed Adelman but got JVG instead and bulked Yao up.

No one would've known about how it would turn out. 2003 was Shaq's era still. Big men injuries were kinda just accepted in those times as "inevitable".

After the Yao era, and the new NBA in general, players now know better to "take care of themselves" (maximize max contract years).

He looks way more athletic than Yao and also a better jump shooter. Haven’t seen him in the low post yet.

    His future is very bright.
