But this along with the statement below from just about 2 weeks ago.... That luxury gift is looking pretty nice for Qatar.

Two weeks ago, Qatar got a NATO-like Article 5 mutual defense commitment - by presidential decree. No Senate ratification. No treaty. Just an executive order.

Defense treaties require Senate approval for a reason: they pledge American blood and treasure. This? It's trading the lives and wealth of U.S. citizens for... a luxury jet to the POTUS library?

Not a big deal, imo. I think a lot of countries train their pilots here in the US with some kind of arrangement with our military. Qatar buys planes for us, hosts a US military base themselves, and cooperates with us diplomatically. I'm sure the bribe helps, but it makes sense to have this military relationship with them as well.

Btw, is "Qatari Emiri Air Force" how you say it? Feels like one too many i's. Or maybe Emiri shouldn't even be in there?

And because it is just an executive order it isn't really worth very much as far as Qatar's security is concerned. Whenever Qatar tries to call on that commitment, the President -- whoever it is at the time, even Trump himself -- can just rip it up. I think we saw with the Iran nuclear deal what an agreement without Senate ratification is worth.

 

According to Wikipedia it is Qatar Emiri Air Force. I guess with "Quatar Emiri" being a singular proper name instead of qatar and emir being seperately converted to individual nested adjectives
