I remember that time Reid Shepard called himself "Ray Lewis with a baseball"

    Made me laugh.

There is no way Reed had a 7'9" reach. Take 2 or 3 inches off his vert and add that to his reach. It's obvious he cheated on his reach to make his vert higher. I think he even alluded to that in an interview - where he said someone taught him a trick to make his vert look higher.

He said that in a self deprecating type of way.
Top tier testers and scouts know these tricks. It’s a very uniform way to test standing reach. The most they’re going to be able to “game” is 1 maybe 2 inches at the absolute most.

And if one person gets away with it, so will the rest of the players being tested.

I agree with you 100% Interestingly, the person who gets all mad when you suggest that's possible never seems to get mad at the rest of you, just me. I guess it's not really about how flawless him and his buddy's tape measures are in their body-measuring industry lol.

Here you go. He says 2" and mentions the trainer. I don't think it was self deprecating. It's a double edged sword because some guys want to be that 6'8" guy with a 7'2" reach so they stretch out and they don't care if that gives them a 35" vert.

Yes, I’ve seen the interview. He’s very much self deprecating there.
Regardless, I know these testers and trainers. They aren’t getting fooled by anyone. There’s a uniform way of measuring standing reach. There’s a shoulder shrug method that some will try to do, but it doesn’t give much benefit.

Like I said, max benefit is 1 maybe 2 inches and 2 is a stretch. If one person got away with it, so did others.

Sheppard has short arms and hands. There’s no denying that. His wingspan is positive due to shoulder width.
Regardless, he has upper tier burst and straight line speed. Above average to good lateral movement and agility.
    Extremely quick hands.
He has to be more disciplined on D, that’s his issue more than anything.

He gambles on D, but that makes him effective in other ways.

One thing I noticed being at the game last night behind the Rockets bench is that Ime is being patient with Reed. Whenever it looked like Reed blew an assignment on the court, surprisingly it was Amen and Sengun that were chewed out by the Udoker.

Adem Bona in the same draft class likely did the same trick as Reed, he shortened his standing reach by 2.5" in the 2024 combine (9'0") versus the 2023 combine (9'2.5"), so he could pop a 40" vert. Obviously, hiding 2.5" when your wingspan is 7'3.75" is a lot easier.

I find it also funny that the official NBA.com combine database has deleted the entry on his measured wingspan for the 2023 combine, because they also messed up that measurement either in reporting or in recording. Most non-official sites reported his 2023 wingspan as 7'0.25", which seems far too short already for his height/standing reach, but the idea that somehow his wingspan grew by 3.5" in a year, but his standing reach went down by 2.5" makes absolutely no sense.

    What are they hiding? #releasethebonawingspan

Ultimately, I agree that the amount that players can cheat the test is small and meaningless in the long run, which is why I personally find it funny when they do manage to get one over on the testers and produce a highly dubious test result.

Just because the test is 99% accurate doesn't mean we accept the 1% outlier as being correct.

Man forget IME - he needs to grow up and learn that championship coaches aren't the HEAVY HANDED my way or the highway types.

They learn how to win by magnifying whatever advantage their players have.

MY WAY or HIGHWAY coaches never win.

He needs to coach and get out of the way, a train is coming through.....and it is this season's Rockets !

I need Reed to show me stronger energy on the court or I don’t believe he has a future here
