Melton was bad as a hitter - but he has done that at most levels, takes him awhile. I suspect he may be a platoon guy if he isn’t traded. His glove and the fact he is our best threat on the bases gives him a chance to stick. There aren’t many base runners in all of baseball better than him.
I appreciate the analysis on Cam. Very interesting about missing his family and routine. That can be significant, especially a young kid thrown into the fire of a pennant race, and your team needs you to ball out because the horses are injured. What is it about his play or batted ball profile that tells you the power is coming? Im no expert, but watched nearly every game and I couldn’t see power coming by watching him. Cole was the opposite. Tiny sample size, but his bat speed, exit velocities and HR distances screamed power. He got on top of some good velocity at the top of the zone. I think he tagged a 96mph FB from Leiter at the top of the zone. There was another one against the angels on a similar pitch. I get that pitchers will probably start throwing a steady diet of breaking stuff, so his K rate is concerning. But the power is obvious.
His bat speed is elite - top 10% as only a rookie, which is a big indicator of power. He also has a high exit velocity - and his top exit velocity is amongst the best in baseball. He also is quite strong and a large man. There are outliers like Derek Bell but the vast majority of guys with those traits hit for excellent to elite power.
Disgusting seeing the Mariners get a 1st round bye. If the Astros weren't such quitters and choke artists, we would be there instead of them.
Too old. He is done. Bit like getting ATL Snitker after he has thought retiring for couple of years. Fresh new guy Vogt type players manager but with brains so players respect him or hard a*s old school type but not other foot in the grave already.
Yea, I don't want an old retread who has a voice for about a year and then the team tunes him out.............time for new blood
He and Cole are on the same corner. All tools but hit (allegedly) with a lot of swing and miss. I would bet on Cole over melton and trade Melton this offseason. He’d be my sweetener to get someone to take on Walkers contract if you think Walker is 10M underwater and someone that’s shitty wants to take a crack at rehabbing Walker to move him and thinks Melton is intriguing as a prospect. You can’t have Melton and Cole both in the lineup.
If you’re willing to carry 2 OF on the bench then Smith/Cole and Meyers/Melton probably form 2 pretty badass platoons.
That leaves 9 other players Diaz / TBD Walker, Altuve, Correa, Paredes, Pena Yordan Dubon That works perfectly if Paredes is passable at 2b. Otherwise its simply too much Dubon again.
Players who should never be penciled in as full time. Whitcomb Dezenzo Leon Trammell Cole Melton I may have forgot one or 2
dump Dubie for urias bc cost. I think urias can do a little more at the plate and be as good as utility IF
I understand your point. But Cole does not belong with these others. He absolutely is lacking in the hit tool so will likely never strike out less than 30% of the time, but he is dynamic when he does make contact. Things happen. Who would you rather have? Player A = 30.7% K/7.0% BB, flyball 27.7% Player B = 17.6% K/8.1% BB, flyball 20.4%
Dubon is perfect for a team who is stuck with Yordan and/or Altuve forced to play in the field. Urias can't play the Of and that's why they need to ditch him and hold on to Dubon.
