Yeah that would be pretty cold blooded to trade him and it would literally undo all of Stone’s good will to make us look like a player’s organization. To your point it really does seem like we’re on a “Just play it out and see” timetable for Amen & Reed right now. I hope they both step up. If they do somehow figure it out. We would legitimately be next in line behind OKC for a young dynasty
For all intents and purposes, the player option in the 2nd year gives FVV an implied no-trade clause. A team can not trade a player on a 1-year contract without their consent. As long as the player option has not been exercised, it is a one-year contract.
Optimistic view: the Rockets upside potential went up drastically. Love FVV, but Amen and Reed have the ability to turbocharge the pg position.
We still have the mid season trade deadline to assess things and most importantly still have time before training camp to add someone and integrate them.
Do we get any kind of injury exception/exemption with the cap to where we could grab a late 20 year old NBA journeyman guard? No thanks to WB type players.
I read somewhere that replacing him with an injury exception might be difficult due to the hard cap. Guess we will see if Stone can cook smthn up to help us out (IF they feel we need it). We will have to wait til later in camp to see….
Lets remember that FVV was suppose to be a rental and out the door this year anyways. Its not good he got hurt and he would have helped a lot but if any of the key young guys take a step up in their game in the areas we hope we will be just fine. If either Sengun or Amen develops a 33+% 3 point shot then a lot changes for the team. Just need 2 chances for one guy to figure it out. Even without that we will still be ok but with that we are looking at a different team.
I guess that in regards to who will act as a pg, we’ll be fine with throwing Amen and Reed to the deeper water. It was already the plan for the next season probably. I do think we’ll miss Fred’s 3pt shooting, which could have been more efficient with KD around. I hope that if necessary, we’ll be able to make some moves after Dec15 and trade for a guard.
I think that while FVV lifts the floor, he also limits the ceiling. He is absolutely a steadying force out there, but he was also terribly inefficient. The Rockets are now forced into the bold decision to give Reed and Amen PG minutes which could pay off big time. It could also bust. Time will tell.
I assume it is to keep teams and players from manipulating Bird Rights. If a player on a one-year deal gets traded, they also lose whatever time they've accrued toward Bird Rights. For FVV, allowing a trade to go through would mean he would lose the Bird Rights the Rockets would have after this season.
The future backcourt for the Rockets has always been Amen and Reed… FVV’s injury just expedited the inevitable.
The theory I've heard is that FVV was more inefficient than he should have been because he was trying to carry the offense when JG was having an off-night...which happened way too often. Also, Ime was playing FVV way too many minutes and Fred doesn't take defensive plays off. The man was exhausted all the time due to leading the offense, playing hard defense, and playing too many minutes. But at the end of the day it might simply be that FVV lacks the physical tools to play those heavy minutes since he has to work a lot harder due to his size limitations on both ends of the floor.
I can buy that! I'd been looking forward to him improving, moving back to the mean of his career potentially. But here we are...
Reed will cement his self as our PG for the next decade plus this season. If Fred ever steps on the court again it will be in a back-up role.
This is one of the most delusional posts I've ever had the pleasure of reading in my 30+ years of Clutchfandom. Bravo to you for your uh..."enthusiasm." This situation reminds me of a quote from the seminal film "The Big Lebowski" (You guys are The Dude in this scene, and I am The Big Lebowski - just go with me here) The Dude: Look, nothing is ****ed, here, man. The Big Lebowski: Nothing is ****ed? [shouting] The Big Lebowski: The god damn plane has crashed into the mountain! Good luck to all of us and may God have mercy on our souls...
