"But in the summer of 2023 Baccarelli served as an expert witness during a class action lawsuit against Kenvue, the maker of Tylenol. A group of parents filed the suit in 2022 with a New York federal court, alleging their children’s autism and ADHD was a result of prenatal use of acetaminophen, which is called paracetamol outside North America. According to a court deposition in August 2023, Baccarelli said he had made “about $150,000” as an expert witness in the case."

Not exactly sure what was said at the news conference, but this is what’s on the FDA website.

If the POTUS or the HHS secretary didn’t make this clear during their announcement, that’s a shame because it can cause unnecessary confusion and issues.

This type of statement does not deserve to be broadcast at the POTUS level. The finding and its caveats are not that controversial and are already well known. It basically boils down to: okay, so what… we still (and always) need more study, and nothing is conclusive.

It is important to note that while an association between acetaminophen and neurological conditions has been described in many studies, a causal relationship has not been established and there are contrary studies in the scientific literature. It is also noted that acetaminophen is the only over-the-counter drug approved for use to treat fevers during pregnancy, and high fevers in pregnant women can pose a risk to their children. Additionally, aspirin and ibuprofen have well-documented adverse impacts on the fetus.

It's a cult, my man. Look at how ATW (who I liked) and others just got crazier and crazier over time. The same's happened to other "moderates" and conservatives here, they just don't see it.

In the 70s, autism was basically understood through the lens of Rain Man.

Today, the spectrum ranges from someone like Rain Man to someone you’d never guess had an autism diagnosis.

IMO, the label loses meaning when it covers such extremes. There should be clearer levels or even different names to reflect those differences.

It's funny, the anti vax crowd is so loud that you miss that stats that say the overwhelming majority of of Americans believe the experts.

The sad thing is conservatives are okay with the Rfkjr being head of hhs because it's anti government putting him in charge

some of you may know I'm an autism parent. our dude is now 21, and was diagnosed around the age of 3 1/2. it was a lot to digest, but we've managed. he's a magnificent young man, but will always have a tough time in life, and will likely never hold more than a relatively menial job. I'm not sure he minds that. hopefully, one day, he will be able to live in a group home, but i have a lot of sleepless nights worrying about what happens when we're gone, and he's on his own. we're building scaffolding for him, network and financial, but i worry about isolation and loneliness.

wrt the Trump/RFK announcement, there are major studies, from Harvard, Hopkins, and elsewhere supporting a potential link between use of Tylenol during pregnancy and an increased risk of autism and ADHD. feel free to use the google, but please don't dismiss it because you heard about it from the bad orange man. it is wise for pregnant women to be cautious.

there is no single cause of autism, but many people in the community believe that there is a combination of factors at work that "mostly" explains the rise in cases over the past 30-ish years. First, there is some sort of genetic predisposition, and second, some sort of environmental trigger. No one is diagnosed with autism at birth, and there is often some sort of regression between the ages of 1-3. why, we don't know.

the vaccine argument is not an argument against vaccines qua vaccines. Rather, it is the way those vaccines are administered, all at once to an individual with an immune system that is not fully formed. Tylenol's role, potentially, could be that it is often prescribed when a kid has an adverse reaction to receiving the vaccines. So, a kid with a predisposition to autism is given a massive jolt to their immune system, which produces a reaction, which is then treated with Tylenol.

I'm not claiming this is proven, it needs much more study, but the concerns are not unfounded. If you have kids, or are considering it, you should applaud the Trump admin for committing to study this issue.

Exactly. This is spot on. Association means nothing by itself. It just means there may or may not be something there, and if the potential impact is big enough, it’s worth doing more studies to confirm. That is why there have been and continue to be ongoing studies, which I wouldn’t be surprised if have been or will be affected by this Admin's policy of cutting funding to scientific studies.

Again, I don’t know exactly what was said, but sadly, with the HHS secretary promising to deliver on the cause of autism very soon a few months ago, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a “political” answer. There is a price to be paid by society when medicines are politicized.

I am sorry Basso. My working theory, and it's just theory, is that autism is a result of an insult in utero of a developing fetus adversely affecting their neuronal migration. Whether it's from a maternal illness, the father having damaged sperm due to older age, temporary rise in maternal core body temperature, radiation, etc, if the neurons take a hit they form weaker connections. And the degree of this weakness leads to severity of symptoms at onset.
What I am most interested in is if the parents are both young and disease/drug free, what is the incidence of autism in that group.

You don't have to be a smartass. I'm sympathetic but he didn't suggest studies he said stop taking it.

I I don't have a kid with autism you've never been in the military. That doesn't stop you internet general

absolutely nothing to be sorry about. when one has kids, this what one signs up for.

we thought we were going to Italy, but found we were welcome in Holland.

    @basso

I'm not trying to be an *******, Trump isn't serious about health by first having Rfkjr in charge of HHS.

Rfkjr is out to prove something that is already settled, vaccines don't cause autism according to medical science, not political hacks like rfkjr
