There is usually some sort of big event that makes gas prices fluctuate but I heard nothing. Just came back and price was higher.

I never know what I'm paying in Europe. Between pumping in by the litre and exchange rates I could be paying 20 bucks a gallon and wouldn't know.

Either Free Speech matters to everyone or to no one, Trump is actively trying to become a King or Dictator - he has to be stopped.

    Thanks.
But the rental car tank needed to be filled before I dropped it off at Franjo Tudman, whether I knew the math or not.

Dude you are so much better than this, why do you sane wash Trump? Why do you try to normalize things that are not normal? You do everything in your power not to believe it.

Do you really believe his policies have made America better?

I don't know why mocking/criticizing the Kimmel issue would make me a Trumper.

Again, an employment issue between ABC and Kimmel is one thing, a genuine threat to free speech is quite another.

To borrow a university example (again): we have plenty of cases where university employees are reprimanded/suspended/fired for "speech" that occurs outside the normal bounds of their job. Where a professor could claim "academic freedom" on a topic of his/her expertise inside the bounds of his/her own classroom, a sufficient amount of leeway can be granted to a professor to use his/her own judgment about how to conduct their own classroom.

On the other hand, if a professor goes OUTSIDE the classroom, and participates for example in an off-campus rally (or an on-campus rally) or on social media, and that professor chooses to make speeches (let's say expressing pro-Palestinian support of Hamas), then that opens up that professor to a NEW level of scrutiny about expressive content that may or may not be protected under the guise of academic freedom--particularly if that political speech is extremely far removed from their academic field, e.g., a chemistry professor chanting anti-Jewish slurs at a campus rally.

None of these things happen in real life by the way.

While an employee of the university may have a "free speech" right to spout anti-semitic slogans at a private/off-campus/non-university location, that does not mean the employer cannot take an interest in that professor's extra-curricular activities. Sometimes the nature of the social offense is so great, an employer can essentially come to a conclusion of: "This employee (professor or not) lacks the judgment we require of a professional in that job title." I.E., we can no longer trust this employee to exercise clear judgment in the future. In which case an employer can begin the hearing process for discipline, with penalties that can vary from suspension of teaching duties, suspension without pay for a specified time period, or termination.

To get back to Kimmel: ABC as an employer can both respect Kimmel's right to voice whatever he would like to voice, on-air or off-the-air, while AT THE SAME TIME come to a conclusion that: "We can no longer trust your judgment to act in the professional capacity we require from our employees in that position." Two separate issues--a "freedom of speech" issue if you want to call it that, and an employee-employer relationship issue. Very important to keep those separate, or at the least to be aware of how they differ. (Universities add that third issue of academic freedom, which is different than free speech albeit related in many ways.)

NONE of this makes me a Trumper or someone who engages in sane washing Trump, whatever that is. I think Democrats/lefties have truly lost the ability to think through issues because of their Trump-colored glasses. Evidence for my belief right here:

Why do you try to normalize things that are not normal? You do everything in your power not to believe it.
The normal world deals with employee/employer relations every day all day long. There is nothing out-of-the-ordinary about any of what I have argued in this thread or elsewhere. I just think left-leaning posters here have lost their ability (if they ever had it) of reading other posters' arguments with a spirit of charity. One mark of good faith argument is the ability to rephrase one's opponents' views in a way that those opponents would agree fairly represents their position. I do not believe I have EVER had someone restate my arguments in a way that I felt accurately captured the gist of what I am saying. And I do not believe I am unclear as a writer--forty years of experience in academia, and I have never had anyone tell me that I am a clown or a dipshit or am sane washinig anything. On occasions when I am unclear, I try to restate my positions (multiple times if needed), especially when I sense the person on the other side is sincerely trying to understand my point. There are a few posters here who fit that description--Nick, durvasa, yourself, SweetLou, maybe a couple of others--the rest just go straight to ad hominems and insults. I don't pay much attention to them except to turn around and mock them when it suits me.

Anyway. I believe ABC can let Kimmel go if they decide Kimmel is now a liability and no longer an asset. FOR WHATEVER REASON. That is their right as an employer.

If ABC felt strongly about "freedom of the press" and wanted to make Jimmy Kimmel their hill to die on, well, they should just go ahead and do that. I don't see that happening, but who knows, maybe this thing will turn around.

And I still think the "consequences" line from Brendan Carr was artfully ambiguous enough that it left room for interpretation. Carr isn't dumb. Consequences didn't automatically entail "affiliates will lose their licenses." Consequences could very well be fines. ABC didn't elect to wait around and see what the consequences would be (if any). Carr could have just been blowing smoke for all we know.

more than you bargained for. I don't think making arguments about free speech, Kimmel, Carr, or about Trump makes me a Trumper. You can respect the office of the President and detest the individual who sits in that office. There has been NOTHING in the entire Kimmel episode that makes me fear for democracy, anymore than firing a professor for anti-semitic remarks makes me fear for higher education. Folks need to get clear on the fact that none of these events are single-concern issues. There's almost always a multitude of factors and influences that are at work and in play.

Yeah, the prices over in the UK when I lived there were a lot more than here, that is what happens when the refinery is in our backyard.

Honest question but why do you think hes better than this? Does he care at all about the blantant corruption thats occurring under Trump after having panic attacks about suppose corruption under biden?

If biden or another democrat had done exactly what Trumps FCC did he would be having a brain aneurysm right now. Hes a conservative and I dont know why he pretends hes not
