Watching the Bears maul the Cowboys right now and you can see the difference Ben Johnson has made in Caleb in such a short time. That's the kind of coaching that is lacking here for CJ.
Based on the organization's history, it is hard to know what they will do. I think the ownership loves Democo, but....
When he couldn’t get a head coaching job or assistant job in the NFL and found himself coaching in the Arena League for Michigan or Wisconsin (I don’t remember which).
Ryans is a devout evangelical Christian and it is a big part of his coaching - so yes, the McNair’s like him a lot (in fairness a lot of people do)… but they aren’t going to want to get rid of him because they genuinely like him…. But they got rid of other people they liked as well, even a Godfather to Cal’s kid.
To be clear- the Bears are not a good ownership at the top. However, the Bears also addressed their OL and also their offensive play calling. The Texans didn’t.
Things aren’t that clear cut in the NFL. Coaching matters more than any other sport and good coaches could get something out of this line and combat the offensive holes, at least scheme around it. It happens every year, every week. The Texans are poorly coached offensively.
It's one play but the mentality of every game having to be close will ultimately bite you in the a$$! Then it will happen again because ultimately you are just playing not to lose.
I don’t remotely agree with this. Good offensive lines have at least some pedigree: high picks; big free agents with a track record. I’ll give Ersery a rookie pass - but, otherwise, there’s not a player on the line - other than possibly Howard - that would start for a good, or even average, football team. This is 100% a personnel issue, first and foremost.
Totally disagree with this. Good/Great OL come from all over the draft, it's just a matter of scouting, coaching, and getting lucky
Good players make everything better, easier. The Eagles, generally considered the best OL in football, have two former 1st round picks and two former 2nd round picks - I think all four were top 50 selections. So, yeah - coaching, scheme, and play calling, as well as a good quarterback, with good skill position players, all important, of course. But I would challenge you to find a good offensive line comprised of discarded parts, has beens, never weres, and whatever other bargain bin players the Texans decided to build around.
Is it 2003 again? Just look at how Kubiak and Gibbs rebuilt the awful 2002-2006 line (only to be now matched by the line these first 3 games). Yes, coaching/scheme/health matters… as does talent. Tunsil was an idiot, but he had talent and was a pro-bowler. Howard didn’t play division 1 ball, but he had talent (but albeit, he’s not an anchor).
I just want to hear DeMeko say the offense sucks. Don’t sugarcoat anything. The fans can see that the offense is trash, and I think the fans want to hear the truth. Maybe the players need to hear the truth. We don’t need a coach that sounds like he’s in denial of what is really happening.
And actually taking them in the draft. This team has been so historically bad at the line they should be drafting 3-4 every year until they luck out with a good unit.
He won’t though. He’s incapable of holding his players or his staff accountable publicly. Who knows what happens behind the scenes.
