Kimmel’s remarks do not cross the threshold for being detrimental to the public interest. On the contrary, the FCC making veiled threats to broadcasters because a talk show host made a political point that a segment of the country doesn’t like is very clearly to me detrimental to the public interest.

I guess that's the topic that's up for discussion. Reasonable people can disagree on that.

I get that that's how people are interpreting Carr's remarks. Having listened to them and having read the transcript along with the interview, I must confess I'm just not seeing it. I think Carr is talking about a fairly widespread pattern of distortion that he as head of the FCC would like to address. I don't seen anything "binding" in what he said on the podcast, in fact, his remarks have a bit of a thinking-out-loud kind of aspect to them. But again, reasonable people can disagree on this.

I’ll admit I haven’t listened to the segment yet, and maybe that will change my impression of what his words are conveying. The quote from the transcript that I’ve seen seems to very clearly tie his threat of repercussions to Kimmel’s recent monologue.

I think he's talking quite broadly about repercussions to ALL public broadcasters. His remarks really aren't limited to Kimmel alone--hence the laundry list that includes <ahem> Hunter Biden's laptop. :D

Trump floats pulling licenses if networks are ‘against’ him after Jimmy Kimmel suspended

President Donald Trump on Thursday suggested that the federal government might revoke the licenses of broadcast television networks that are “against” him.

Trump’s comment came a day after ABC suspended airing the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” show because of comments its host made linking the alleged killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk to Trump’s MAGA movement.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr earlier on Wednesday had hinted that the broadcast license of ABC — which is a subsidiary of Disney — was at risk if it did not “take action on Kimmel.”

Speaking on Thursday to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “I have read someplace that the networks were 97% against me, again, 97% negative, and yet I won and easily, all seven swing states,” referring to his 2024 election win.

“They give me only bad publicity, press. I mean, they’re getting a license,” Trump said, according to audio from a press gaggle provided by the White House.

“I would think maybe their license should be taken away,” Trump said.

The president said that the decision “will be up to Brendan Carr.”

Carr earlier Thursday told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” that “we’re not done yet” with changes in “the media ecosystem” that are consequences of Trump’s election.

“I think Brendan Carr is outstanding, he’s a patriot,” said Trump, who nominated Carr to his position.

“He loves our country, and he’s a tough guy. So we’ll have to see.”

Broadcast television stations affiliated with networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox, must receive a license from the FCC to operate because their content is transmitted over the air, and is technically free for viewers as long as they have an antenna.

That contrasts with cable TV networks, whose subscribers pay fees to distributors to watch.

Here's the video of the entire Carr interview.

Specific bits on Kimmel starts at 11:13

IMO it's pretty clear he's sending a message to the broadcasters that their licenses from the FCC are on the line if they don't 'find way to change conduct and take action on Kimmel'.

It's not even a thinly veiled threat. It's just out in the open.

If 'public interest' is the standard now, then what's stopping the FCC unilaterally determine what is and what is not in the public interest? It's insane.

The biggest issue that people are not grasping is corporations and board members make huge sums of money when you have a merger/acquisition. Disney and nextstar both have multi billion dollar mergers pending waiting for approval from the Trump doj. They arent going to throw away those acquisitions and upset Trump.

Corporations by nature are risk adverse. They arent going to risk billion dollar acquisitions and fight the admin. Thats not how corporate America operates

Yeah, but per OsT, "Trump says a lot of things that people and corporations routinely ignore".

These are just words. What do you think words are? You probably think they're elements of speech that symbolize concepts and physical objects and they can be structured in such a way as to communicate to people your thoughts and plans. And you probably think those structures of words are called sentences.

Typical liberal woke terrorist, stoking the flames of divisiveness.

Just one hour after thanking the president for his appointment, Carr wrote on X, “We must dismantle the censorship cartel and restore free speech rights for everyday Americans.”

Since Trump’s election, Carr has gone on the attack, threatening broadcasters with enforcement actions and investigations for perceived slights against Trump and the MAGA movement.

Carr has been a regular at Mar-a-Lago as well as Fox News, and earlier this year he showed his loyalty to Trump by wearing a gold lapel pin of the president’s face.

    https://www.cnn.com/2025/09/18/media/brendan-carr-jimmy-kimmel-fcc-first-amendment

When a man wears a gold pin of the President's face on his lapel you know the butt kissing and "loyalty" to go after anyone who hurts Trump's big ego is going to come. The disgustingly partisan control of free speech is not only encouraged by Trump and Carr, but applauded when they take retribution. That's anyone who doesn't Idolize Trump like he wants them to. No surprise that Carr reacted on social media to the news of ABC’s Kimmel show suspension with a celebratory dancing GIF from “The Office.”

No surprise, that he is just one of many Trump administration picks who wrote a chapter in Project 2025, which of course Trump claimed to know nothing about. Just another of hundreds of thousands of flat out lies by Trump.

Delusional. So you want ABC is going to throw away a multi billion dollar merger in the toilet and go to war with the admin and risk having their license revoked when we have a radical right wing supreme court? Corporations only duty is to their shareholders. They arent here to protect your freedoms. They dont give a **** about the public.

The blame solely rests upon the admin who uses the power of the government to go after individuals they dont like.

Playbook of a Fascist, control the media and therefore the message. I stuck up for Disney when Fl tried to railroad them, but not now, they picked money over morals

I like Jimmy K, he is on too late for me but when I did watch his show it was funny. This is what late night comedians do, they make jokes about current topics and in this instance there really wasn't anything bad........................so now where is the outrage when fox says we should kill homeless folks, or lies 24/7

I am sure all the maga sheep will bootlick this along with the rest of tramps BS.....................all this Kirk martyrdom is so funny, the dude is a podcaster who now has bills with his name on it, abc who fired JK wants to please the maga folks and put our Kirk programming..........my gosh the ass kissing the maga sheep do is off the CHAIN
