I honestly don't know where cinema would be without Robert Redford. I used to marvel at him when I watched "The Electric Horseman" and "Butch and Sundance" as a kid. Even his narration in "A River Runs Through It" during and at the end was absolutely awesome in bringing that film home. His voice was just huge on screen and instantly recognizable. And, "The Horse Whisperer" was also just outstanding work on his part. He just always struck me as the best of the best in film and as a person. The first time you saw him...you just knew he was big star material because you could feel his presence on screen. He was that good.
The man who gave us Utah. Maaaaaaaaaaan, there goes a large part of my childhood. The other part is dying with every piano note Jonathan Cain plays in the background of his grifter wife's infomercials. "Who ARE those guys?" And, the original "my Native American wife Swan (La Cisne) is making me veeeeery horny" look:
I need to rewatch a bunch of his movies now...The Sting, The Electric Horseman, Three Days of the Condor, Sneakers, All the President's Men, Butch and Sundance, etc....
I have been watching a few clips from Three Days of the Condor and thought about posting them. But decided that it would spoil it for those who haven't seen the movie.
An excellent film that ages well, and like several of his films, I've seen it more than once. I remember seeing Redford and Jane Fonda in Barefoot in the Park (1967) when it came out. It was a hit - earned $30 million on a $2 million budget, back when a dollar was a dollar. Redford's early career was on Broadway. He played the same role in Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park on Broadway in 1963, yet another hit. The gentleman wasn't just a "pretty face." He was also one hell of an actor.
