Success in national teams are heavily dependent on generations and basketball culture. Turkish national team's successes all happened 10 years apart for instance. He won 3 of last 5 Euroleague (equivalent of NBA championship in Europe) with 2 different teams so yes, it's safe to say whole Europe listens when he speaks.
And Ataman is an improving politician. He used to berate players and had a very heavy hand. Now, his focus is better, and this tournament has been his best work to date. Can he push Turkey over the top? Maybe. The Turkey defense will be the best one that Germany has seen, and the German NBA players have gotten whatever shots they wanted to take. Ataman should be able to game plan and take away some opportunites. I hope Sengun shakes the jitters and plays his game.
He is almost 60 so him joining the NBA is probably a longer shot. As for other Euroleague coaches joining the NBA, it will happen but I don't see an army joining soon. American coaches at least some have already studied European basketball, it is not the best kept secret.
My only argument was his mind games being effective in Europe. On the other topic about his possible NBA journey, if it was me I would stick with Euro and complete my legacy as a legend but Ataman is a such a daredevil he'll probably try if an opportunity comes. A part of me wanna see him do that challenge to be honest. If he does go to the NBA, I know it's completely different and most people would fail but still I wouldn't bet against such a crazy man.
Trophies in weak competitions with weak players don't really count in the real basketball world. How many wins does he have in the NBA? When he has some maybe you can make these kind of assertions, as it stands he's a famous European coach full of gimmicks who's never actually coached, won, lost or otherwise at the real top level of basketball. He's more Coach K than Phil Jackson, and I'd probably rank K much higher in truth.
lesssgo Alpi! My good friend is the FIBA table official for the Final, sending good vibes through her!
What a summer for Alpi. Playing a EuroBasket final is a better preparation for the NBA than doing anime workouts with Shaolin monks. Returning to the NBA as a 23 year old EuroBasket winner and MVP will be incredible. But even if Türkiye loses the game, it's such a valuable experience. I don't think it was just luck that he was able to beat Jokic and Giannis. He is so good at operating in tight spaces and he simply makes everyone around him so much better. The narrative that he had more help than Jokic and Giannis is revisionist bullshit. Yes Türkiye has some solid players but there is a reason why they were like 8th or something in the power rankings before the tournament. Alpi and Ataman are the reasons why Türkiye steamrolled into the final without losing a single game.
Undermine? Please…just calling it out since this article provides the context. LOL @ not okay with my efforts. To do what?
