Alpi throwing shade on the Greek: “We just put pressure on him... Giannis is one of the best players in the world, and we just tried to help Ercan, and I think we did a good job,” Sengun added. “He’s an amazing player, but he’s not like a great passer. So, we’re just trying to help and like jump to close the paint.” https://www.sportskeeda.com/basketb...rce=dlvr.it&utm_medium=bluesky#key4=sknbabsky
If Turkey win it all, imo Sengun instantly becomes the best player in Turkish history at the age of 23 after being a Turkish League MVP at 18. Nuts that people still underrate his offensive ceiling. Currently averaging: 21 points (56/35/74 splits) 11 rebounds 7 assists almost 1 block in 30 minutes His jumper and handle seem to have improved. His fitness & athleticism are peaking right now. Passing very intelligently. So excited for this upcoming season.
sengun feeling nationalistic caption is from a turkish pop song, "some sea air would do you good, don't you think", clearly hinting to the turkish war of indepedence, which ended when the greek forces were driven back into the sea.
ataman mentioned that in the press conference after the game - there's little you can do to stop a player like giannis in the nba - but with fiba rules you can plan to contain him. - also why thinks he can beat the rockets with panathinakos + sengun.
Hopefully not! I don’t really see a clear hinting either. It would be sad for me to see a bad side of him.
Could he do it in a real full length game though rather than college length? That's the real difference, the ONLY way any Euro team has a chance is by playing a shorter game with rules that work in their favour. If they were asked to play NBA caliber (so far above and beyond everything in Europe it's genuinely ridiculous tbh) teams with NBA rules it'd be so much of a massacre it'd be like watching a female team playing 14 year old boys.
are you turkish? it seems very clear to me, since its like a very common idiom to use in turkey, especially after a sports game against greece. wouldn't call it a bad side either, btw.
I am Turkish living in the us so I don’t follow pop culture anymore. Are you talking about ‘denize dökmek’ when you say standard idiom? I didn’t see the post as a reference to that one but I couldn’t make much sense about it either. If he wants to tease the Greeks, I think there are better ways than referring to a war, especially if it is regarded as a big tragedy on the other side.
what do you mean by college length? 40 minutes? of course, i think only in the nba the game is 48 minutes. i think the main difference is defensive 3 seconds rule and fouls are not called as easily. with the nba rules - which favour the nba teams obviously - no chance, but with the fiba rules i would put money on the ataman / sengun team. (without kd, you can have jalen green )
Like I say, FIBA rules is closer to youth basketball than top tier pro basketball. If you have to play a game closer to youth and women than the best players in the world, can you really say you're competitive or even remotely on a level with them? Even without it the level of athleticism is just a tier above tbh, there's literally Şengün and no other top tier caliber player, no matter how good the coach thinks he is the levels really aren't close. Play actual full length top tier basketball and half of that Panathinaikos team may need an ambulance from exhaustion, and that's without even factoring them trying to actually guard and keep up with a SIGNIFICANTLY higher caliber of player across the board. Amen could probably go at half speed and still be more athletic than anybody on their roster, and that'd include Şengün as a ringer. Şengün himself would be the only person who wasn't outclassed to the point of ridicule.
yes "denize dökmek", do you think the lyrics with the sea air after a game with the greeks is like a coincidence? its not even a new song and its not even the chorus of the song also, sengun listens to the turkish war songs before national games ( like this one , players of civilization series may have heard the song ) and he's from the black sea region - a more nationalistic part of turkey. i would agree if he mentioned for example 1453 after the game, that would be tasteless - because that was like offensive campaign - but this isn't that. it's more like hinting at waterloo after a game between france - england, especially if france lost.
Everyone to their taste. I don't like references to wars, killing others etc., sports is for friendship, competition. As i said there are 100 more elegant ways of doing this.
I don't know what you are arguing about really yes nba players are better, more athletic, etc. yes with the nba rules ataman would have very little chance. but the fiba rules are the rules the rest of the world plays, the rules in the world championships, olympics etc. are olympics or world championships not top tier pro basketball in your eyes? giannis scored 12 points this game. last season, he played close to 70 games, only 1 game he scored less, in all the others he scored more than 18 points. is amen more athletic than giannis so you cannot stop him? really?
fair enough. i wouldn't mind if a greek player would hint at kolokotronis ( leader of greek war of independence) for example. for me, its more like a banter, i think alperen also see it that way.
No, Olympics and World Championships are not remotely top tier basketball to me. It's mickey mouse ball, which is why the USA roflstomps everybody casually without trying and it's a huge upset if they don't. It'd be even worse if they made those international teams play top tier rules and full length games as well, again, the "FIBA rules" (college without goaltending and a bit more physicality, and teams with very little athleticism, let's be truthful about what "FIBA" actually is) are the only way they can even hope to try and compete because it helps take away the significant advantages in fitness and athleticism from the real top tier players in the world. The OKC thunder would obliterate every single international team that's not the USA without breaking a sweat.
ataman said with the fiba rules and sengun, he would beat rockets. didn't say anything else. didn't say fiba rules are better, didn't say his players are better. so what are you even talking about?
I don't really care for the NBA rules--except freedom of movement, so they allow players to move without the ball. But the NBA has so many stupid rules about rebounding, traveling, defensive three-second, etc. And the European rules for goaltending are far more exciting and reward athleticism. Would a European team beat an NBA squad that is in shape and playing hard? With the way they prioritize ball/player movement and shooting? Maybe. I think the gap is much closer, and the NBA should slide their product closer to Europe so we don't lose in the Olympics to France in the future.
