The plastics industry created the plastic recycling movement because they foresaw how single-use plastic volumes would explode and eventually create a massive, global (and unsolvable) environmental disaster. They did this to stay ahead of the problem in the minds of the general public.

The real fact is very little plastic is recyclable (for several reasons) and recycling efforts are just a giant waste of time. In the USA, only ~5% of plastic is recycled. The vast majority of it winds up in landfills.

TLDR: The plastics industry realized beforehand they were creating a future environmental disaster. They reacted by creating a recycling movement that does very little, but is enough to insulate them from public blame.

To be clear, metal recycling is a completely different animal. Fortunately.
