I don't get why. You don't actually have to heave it, it almost never goes in so surely people can't be that precious over their percentages that's silly? lol
I think it is obvious some players care. I think it is obvious that some fans care about heaves so much that they think it is the sole reason their favorite player has a low three-point percentage. To me, it is a quality of life change that isn't difficult to implement.
Yeah I think it's just a bit extraneous for what I've always thought was a big nothing burger. If you're a 3pt shooter already 1 or 2 of those a game won't make that much of an impact, if you're not it probably already sucks so who gives a ****? It is what it is I guess. (I can actually imagine players lobbying for this now that I think about how some of them are.)
If curry took 2 a game his 3pt % would drop from over 39% to 34%, it makes a big difference. Jokic last season shot 41.7% but if you take away the heaves he’s at 44%. Some players have money tied into their 3pt%, or players where some of their contract value is tied to 3pt%. Tari shooting 35% and 37% next season changes his contract, that’s just the reality.
I thought Tari hasn't had an extension yet, do all rookie contracts have shooting conditions? I genuinely wasn't aware.
No no, some players do have that shooting condition though. I’m saying someone like tari, where a decent part of their contract will be based on how he shoots, can’t be tanking their %. Tari at 35% isn’t getting as much as an rfa (or from the rockets) as a tari at 37%.
It's a fair point, but it's rare enough for starters to have more than one of these a game, never mind roleplayers. It is what it is though I guess, I am interested in the point above as to whether it counts if they score it though because for me that's just blatantly rigging the stats and bad math haha.
Jokic took 22, i’m sure that was by far the most in the league. Even curry only took 6. The idea is that right now they basically can’t take those shots but if they won’t hurt them they will take them all the time for more action.
Largest change for the Rockets is FVV who goes from 34.5 to 35.8%. Jokic is the only one that it really causes a big change. For the most part, it isn't a big deal.
Yeah that's what I thought when I said it originally tbh. I might not sit and look at metrics all day but I am educated, the math wasn't mathing with how few shots I assumed people were taking but I'll take a lot of stuff like that at face value because I can't be bothered looking it up. Thanks for clarifying haha.
It’s not a big deal because guys don’t take the shots. If they stopped counting it the attempts would skyrocket, they want more attempts.
I bet it would increase like 5x or more. Most guys won’t take it now because it’s dumb to do it, for free they will practice it and take a ton.
They can make a shot from beyond the half court a 4pt shot. Maybe that would entice teams to take the heaves more often.
