As a Turk, I’m saying this: there’s no need to make any reference to Alpi’s Turkishness. “Turkish Tornado,” “Turkish Delight,” etc.—all of these are cringe. They don’t represent Alpi’s connection with Houston either. Aren’t you aware? This kid loves Houston and shows it at every opportunity. He has embraced being a Houston kid as part of his identity. Can’t things be more natural? Shaquille O’Neal was just “Shaq” for years. Why can’t Alperen simply be “Alpi”?

This is off topic but Luka had 22 points in the first half against Germany and Slovenia leads by 6.

Im sorry in a foreign country it makes sense. No one is saying people in Turkey should call him that. People are celebrating his Turkishness its not meant to be derogatory at all. Man the world is becoming soft. Im not the least bit racist but when compliments on your heritage start being taken as insults you are a bit too soft for me. There are people in America who wont even know he's turkish BTW. I would think having him as a symbol would be a good thing for Turkish basketball just like "the great wall" was for China.

The Surgeon is genuinely not bad. His passes and post moves cut through the defense with accuracy. And while it doesn’t sound like his name, it at least looks similar.

very much appreciate you sharing these streamable links

but, you can embed the video. instead of just pasting the link, streamable links are supported by the media button, to the right of the image button.

copy the link into that. Results in this:

your second link is broken, probablydue to copyright infringement

I still don’t think there’s any need to emphasize Alpi’s Turkishness. The fact that some Americans don’t know Alpi is Turkish doesn’t pose any problem at all. I didn’t consider T-Mac my idol because he was from this place or that place, nor did anyone like Tim Duncan because of where he came from.
If you want to highlight Alpi’s Turkishness, you can just add the word “Şengün” into the English lexicon and that’s more than enough. He already has a unique last name. Many people think that the term "Şengün" is "Şen" (cheerful/happy) and "gün" (day). But in reality, the term Şengün was a common word among ancient Turks and Mongols. When you said someone was a şengün, it meant they came from a noble family or were the lord of a place.
So, if you want a reference to Alpi’s Turkishness, just saying “The Şengün (that is, "the lord)” is more than enough. The term is already very telling.

How bout no. Im gonna call him Turkish whatever because its not meant as a racist or derogatory term and I think its cool. You'd just have to deal with it. Nicknames sometimes are funny sometimes they are awesome. Sometimes they are both of those things and they have in them where you come from. No one is gonna change nicknames for you bud. I dont have that power Im guessing people will still call him that regardless of what any of us say here. Being sensitive and making something thats not an insult into an insult is just gonna cause you a headache. no one else will care or even know we've had this conversation lol. For instance I dont like BABY JOKER and guess what no one cares lol

Of course I have friends, and if they give me a trash nickname I say "nah that's trash, not feeling it" and we go on with our lives. You have a really bizarre way of looking at things tbh.

Youre calling me bizaree while pretending your dislike for a nickname is also Alpie's dislike. Are you Alperen Sengun? Then shut up.

haha. update us some more on the 'off topic' so there is less fighting over nicknames that tend to naturally come about for the "TRUE FRANCHISE PLAYER" types & comes from their trade mark trait. Sounds like Germany won?

Are you? **** off you bell end, I don't take orders from weirdos obsessed with calling somebody by the country they come from because they have no originality. No wonder you think the Wizard is a good nickname.

I don't think that poster was saying it's racist to have a nickname refer to Al P's nationality, just that it's cringey in his opinion. Like instead of "The Dream" people tried to make Hakeem's nickname be "The Nigerian Nightmare" just because he's from there.

Why is it cringey to him if not because he feels a certain way about nationality. People have those types of nicknames. Just saying people are gonna call him that because he is in America. Also nigerian nightmare is kinda badass lol

Luka finished with 39/10/7 but it wasn't enough. Slovenia had a lead but collapsed late 3rd quarter, early 4th and never got back over the hump. Luka didn't shoot quite well enough to make up for his teammates. They were within 1 possession with ~2 mins left but couldn't hit the key shot or get stops.

Based on this one game, I think Germany seems quite beatable. However, if Cedi Osman isn't healthy, Turkey wouldn't have much of a chance.

Nope, you started the aggression and name calling, now you're just crying like a little b**** because I gave worse back to you. And you had the audacity to call other people soft? You make charmin look like granite.

Because he's allowed to think something sounds cheesy even if those types of nicknames exist? If Lamelo got a nickname like "American Armageddon" while playing in Lithuania I wouldn't care at all. But if someone else thought it was cringey I wouldn't consider them soft. It's just their opinion on whether a nickname is cool or not.
