I really thought he was going to be a star but holy crap, he just won't grow up with his approach at the plate.
You are correct. I hope we keep both. Diaz is only in his second year starting. You don’t give up on a catcher with his offensive potential anytime soon. People have no idea about his personality and his coachability. Can’t stand it when people assume crap like that.
I am also highly encouraged by how the other players interact with Diaz. He’s clearly well-liked and that wouldn’t be the case if he were lazy or a bad teammate. He is very valuable even if he is just a league average bat with league average C defense (although his defense has been well below average this season).
For me his bat does not quite justify his defense. Hoping for a big off season adjustment. Re-signing Caratini is a must.
My only problem wuth Yainer is that he could be a top 2 or 3 catcher in MLB but is apparently happy just being OK. If he had any kind of a plan at the plate and actually developed some discipline he would be a player that a team needed to have instead of one that just keeps them from looking for an upgrade. How about actually taking a pitch when the pitcher walks the guy in front of you, Yainer?
Need to bring back the old Kangaroo Court. Every time a batter swings at the first pitch and it was a ball, he owes a $100 fine. Proceeds donated to charity.
He is supposedly well liked by players and is considered “a man” in clubhouse because he will talk straight to people. He has rubbed some coaches the wrong way because he tends to do things differently. I don’t think they are looking to move on from him - if anything I have heard optimism about how good he will be if he can learn to work the count better. Yeah - he will swing at anything, but he is also capable of hitting elite pitching and that’s rare for a catcher.
One thing I really love about the Robot Ump potential is that that it will take the "fetish for framing" out of the equation for catchers. You've already made it easier to steal bases, give the catchers a little something to even things out. Unlike you were traditionally taught to do back in the day, catchers now don't move their body (up/down/left/right) and just stab the glove at any pitch that's off the plate. I miss when they were a true Backstop
Just assuming because he is making no effort to change. Because I have eyes If he is making an effort he has no ability to change.
Not that easy or coachable. If it were, then Altuve and Biggio would have about 8000 hits between them, just by not swinging at outside sliders
Well, then he'd probably get fined a couple of hundred dollars for being a dumbass and associating with you
You remember former Astro farmhand catcher John Buck? Part of the first Verlander trade? Dude spent 10+ years in MLB, much respect on that. This is a really brilliant thing to watch
