Yep, my favorite guy in this draft class. I expect Frey to move quickly through the system if he can stay healthy.
Walker Janek is currently 3-3 with a solo homer (11) and a two-run single for Asheville. He's DHing tonight while Jancel Villarroel is catching. Villarroel hit his first home run since joining Asheville and now has 7 on the year.
Both DSL teams won today... The Blue team got a (7-inning) no-hitter from Ismael Obregon and Adrian Ardines as they beat the Padres' Brown team 5-0. Sami Manzueta hit his 3rd home run of the season. Obregon walked one and struck out seven, and Ardines threw two perfect innings, striking out two. The Orange team walked off with a 5-4 win in 10 innings over the Rays 1. Juan Rojas hit his 2nd homer of the year. Leonel Murrieta allowed a hit and struck out two over five scoreless innings of relief to get the win.
Lucas Spence and Will Bush have both gone deep for Corpus. For Spence, that's his 8th homer of the year, while Bush now has 13. Zach Cole is 2-2 and has scored twice. Bryce Mayer: 4 IP, 3 H, ER, BB, 8 K
Alonzo Tredwell in his Corpus debut: 3 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 6 K Tredwell had plenty of trouble to work around as Tulsa loaded the bases on him twice, but he kept them off the board.
Garcia looks fairly dominant in SL tonight… far more so than any of the other rehab starters. He does have enough bullpen experience to be a weapon there if needed.
Garcia pitched well enough to end his SL stint. He certainly could take the last position in the Astros bullpen. He is stretched out so he could piggy back off the next Spence Arrighetti / Jason Alexander / Colton Gordon / AJ Blubaugh start. He might even be able to make two long relief appearances a week.
But why would he even still be there if they intend to put him in the bullpen? All he is doing now is getting built up to pitch 5+ innings at a time. That is wasted if he goes to the bullpen.
This is probably a stupid question but can I get a breakdown and/or MLB comparison for Kevin Alvarez? I see that he is pretty unanimously ranked in our top 2-5 prospects but had not heard of him before a month ago. I seem to recall he was an international signee but did not think much of it at the time? What's his deal?
The Astros need a long reliever, given how bad some of the recent starts have been. This might be his role come playoff times. He and the Astros might want to limit his IPs this year.
He is just a really really good teenage international signee prospect. We won’t know anything really until he gets to full season ball in the US. You can’t tell anything from DSL stats. So all we have to go on is scouting remarks. And from those, he has a plus hit tool, plus present power with elite power potential, and current average OF defense that may deteriorate as he gets bigger.
