The U.S. labor market delivered a disappointing performance in July, adding just 73,000 jobs, far below economists' expectations and raising fresh concerns about the pace of economic recovery. According to new data released by the Labor Department Friday morning, the unemployment rate rose to 4.2%, up from 4.1% in June.

But the headline number may understate the problem. May and June job gains were sharply revised downward by a combined 258,000 jobs, with May’s total cut to just +19,000 and June's to +14,000. These revisions mark one of the steepest two-month corrections in recent memory and suggest the labor market has been far weaker than previously understood.

Another striking detail: 75% of the jobs added in July came from the healthcare sector, underscoring how lopsided the labor market’s growth has become.

It took 12 hours - one jobs report plus several huge downward revisions - for the Dewey Defeats Truman thing to happen to this headline (the article itself ain't as stupid as the headline, as is frequently the nyt style these days.

Never underestimate how dumb and stupid Trump is when it comes to tariffs. Switzerland just got a tariff of 39%.

39% you say? How was this number determined?

Because their trade deficit is 38 billion (watches, food etc). And because 38.whatever is almost 39. Therefore, 39% tariff!

Now I'm going to open a watch factory in the US right? Just so embarrassingly dumb.

(Bloomberg) -- Switzerland’s political and business elite are reeling from Donald Trump’s shock punitive tariffs that the government was confident it had avoided.

The US president’s decision to slap tariffs of 39% on all Swiss imports is among the most dramatic of any so far, heralding a rude awakening on Friday, a national holiday that is a highlight of Switzerland’s summer calendar.

The stakes are enormous. Last year, such was the extent of the country’s goods exports that it notched up a $38 billion trade deficit with the US

    ****

While the government tries to figure out what went wrong, independent observers appear equally baffled by the arbitrary nature of the 39% figure.

“Nobody knows where the 39% comes from,” said Stefan Legge, a professor of tax and trade policy at St. Gallen University, who wondered aloud why the US president didn’t pick a round number like 40%.

I know where it came from!

The U.S. economy added just 73,000 jobs in July, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced, missing forecasters' already measly expectations of 110,000 jobs.

But even more troubling is that BLS revised down the previous two jobs reports by an eye-popping 253,000 jobs, saying that just 19,000 jobs were added in June and 14,000 added in May.

That makes the last three jobs reports the weakest since the anomaly of the COVID-19 crisis. Not taking the COVID-19 months into account, this was the worst three consecutive months for job creation since 2010 and the aftermath of the Great Recession.

The 73,000 jobs added in July likely will be revised down as well.

    Tariff uncertainty hits manufacturing

Factories shed 11,000 jobs in July. Domestic manufacturers are supposed to be the beneficiaries of the president's trade policies. But factory managers complain that uncertainty over import taxes has depressed orders and other activity. The federal government has been charging a 10% tax on nearly everything the U.S. imports since April, and higher tariffs are set to take effect on many goods next week.

"These tariff wars are beginning to wear us out," one anonymous factory manager said in a survey released Friday by the Institute for Supply Management. "There is zero clarity about the future, and it's been a difficult few months trying to figure out where everything is going to land and the impact on our business. So far, tremendous and unexpected costs have been incurred."

judge the convicted felon by his actions.

the confusions emanating from his ever-change TACO stance. the whipsaw actions have planted uncertainty in the US economic, leading to many co laying employees, like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, etc.

because of the massive layoff announced, the BLS had to make adjustments to the job#s. the most recent adjustment so anger Trump and he fire the Director BLS today. https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/mar...eak-jobs-report/ar-AA1JK9sH?ocid=BingNewsSerp

no, the sky didn't fall, but the Tangerine Musolini threw a temper tandrum because the BLS was doing her job

In case anyone missed @adoo 's post or didn't already know this...

Trump fires commissioner of labor statistics after weaker-than-expected jobs figures slam markets

Published Fri, Aug 1 20252:20 PM EDT

President Donald Trump on Friday fired the Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner, hours after the agency reported that job growth in the U.S. had slowed to a near-halt.

In a Truth Social post that also directed even more fire at Fed Chair Jerome Powell, Trump accused BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer of being a political appointee who was manipulating jobs data.

“I was just informed that our Country’s “Jobs Numbers” are being produced by a Biden Appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala’s [Harris’] chances of Victory,” Trump wrote.

“We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified,” he added.

CNBC has reached out to the BLS for comment. NBC News confirmed that McEntarfer has been fired. The BLS operated under the Department of Labor, whose commissioner, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, is a Trump appointee.

The stunning demand came the same day that the BLS reported a gain of just 73,000 nonfarm jobs in July, below market expectations. In addition, the bureau revised the two previous months down sharply, cutting a combined 258,000 from the prior counts, putting the three-month growth rate at a paltry 35,000. It was the biggest two-month downward revision since April 2020, the early days of the Covid crisis.

    Translation:

New numbers will be skewed to whatever Trump wants to say they are. Trump loyalty and willingness to lie and deceive if asked are much more important than competence and qualifications.

Years ago if some crackpot South American or African dictator were doing stuff like this our congresspeople would be calling on them to be sanctioned or removed from power. Now we have one political party that's completely asleep, the other is, like, heh, heh!

Dang the number of people who think the other governments pay the tariff is too damn HIGH.

I just explained it to someone and he goes so you don’t believe reports that say we brought in billions from this country and that country….

i wanted to poke my ears out.

he also goes: well i am going to trust that people in power know what they are doing and they know more about the economy than me and you.

These were the same folks injecting horse tranquilizers instead of taking a covid shot even though the doctors in power told them differently.

He then he started insulting me more....
He goes well think about where you are based on your knowledge and they are where they are.
implying, if I knew so much about economics and trade relations, why am I not running the country.

as if I just raise my hand and say I want to be president?

THE FOOL DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHO PAID THE TARIFFS. HE GOES IT'S THE OTHER COUNTRIES.

    I should add: mexican, ~35.
and he has once told me he is not fully legal but somehow is a realtor.
i am confused how trump brainwashed this demographic of people.

on a related note, how the fk is a realtor still a thing? we don't use travel agents, why are people still relying on realtors?

Fujifilm has raised prices on cameras and lenses across its lineup, with price hikes reaching into the hundreds of dollars. Among the hikes is an increase to the price of Fuji’s ultra-popular X100VI from $1,599 to $1,799. The capable X-T5 has gone from $1,699 to $1,899. And the already very expensive GFX100 II has gone from $7,499 to $8,299 — an $800 increase. Increases to lens prices appear to be somewhat more modest, with bumps in the $50 to $150 range.

The price hikes come as President Donald Trump threatens to finally, actually implement his sweeping new round of tariffs on August 7th. Nintendo announced today that it was raising the price on older Switch models, and Apple has said it’s burning well over $1 billion on added costs.
