Are we even going to mess with the youngsters in August?

With the new additions, it seems to me keeping our veterans happy with enough playing time is going to be a bit of a challenge. We need to find starts for Dubon, Urias, and Sanchez. Altuve and Correa will be everyday players for the most part. Matthews will almost certainly be sent down. They are not going to just throw Dubon to the side, so I expect him to get CF starts. Maybe Melton? CF seems to be the only opportunity to me.

The youngsters will have to earn their PT. The Astros may even start to play Cam Smith less. This is the home stretch and winning will be emphasized over development.

They may plan to let him simmer in the minors, but Matthews certainly earned a September call-up should they decide to go there, and even has a ceiling of garnering consideration for a postseason roster spot, though probably not

Playoffs are for vets. I don’t expect anybody to b****. I’m guessing Sanchez starts against every RH. Where is Urias going to play? Must be 2nd base, but I don’t think he has a lot of experience there. Maybe a spot start or two at 3b? Is Dubon our starting CF until (if) Myers comes back or is it Trammel?

Just depends on health for position players. Now some of the vets will be able to get more rest now that we have better than replacement level depth.

On the pitching side, it would not surprise me to see Ullola called up at some point down the stretch.

Have we already forgotten that a random Astro gets hurt every other week?

September call ups are now limited to 1 position player and 1 pitcher.

Urias is for spot starts and bench depth and so the Short/Guillorme/Whitcomb/Rodgers(whoever else) types are no longer on the roster again.

Didn’t realize that. That kind of sucks. Why would they make such a rule?

Because they are trying to make baseball more entertaining and. Nothing was more of a best down than watching 12 guys pitch in a September game. It was awful and dumb.

Howeeevah...for teams that are totally out of it, and their fans, it gave the players a bit of experience and the fans a bit of something to be interested in.

I'm not sure of the reasoning behind that rule change.

I liked it, especially for relief pitching that could give your guys a bit of a break before the playoffs or to get a look at a minor league player that had been talked about all year. Oh well.

I think part of it was that it was screwing with playoff races in September when some teams ended up playing AAAA teams while others had to play real MLB teams.

    1. Money- more players in a clubhouse means more money the owners have to shell out.

    2. Time- more bullpen arms meant more pitching changes and longer games. Seems that has been rectified with the 3 batter rule though.

    3. Roster advantage- no set limit on the numbers so some teams had way more players to use than another team.

    4. Quality of rosters- some playoff teams benefited from basically playing AAA teams.

But there was always the "unwritten rule" that if you were playing games that might impact the postseason (pet peeve #4, there are no "playoffs" in MLB), you play your best players, no matter how much your team sucks

Isn't it just a pitcher cap of 14?
