Yaz definitely had some good years after 31. .877, .859, .870 etc. after 31. At 26 he had a .799 ops., which isn’t bad but it was a down year for him Cal Ripken is another good example. Look at his 1991 season and then his 1992 season. Willie McGee is another one. Hit .353 one year and then .256 the next. He had some great seasons and some painfully average ones.
Last four are only starters due to injuries. Three of our six starting pitchers are literally AAA callups. Seattle just can't catch a break.
Don’t know why you are using hall of famers to make this argument. And Willie McGee had a career .720 OPS and a 100 OPS+ - he was the definition of average. If anything he would be used to argue that career years happen and you can’t expect that moving forward. That being said, I don’t disagree with you. I think of guys like Eugenio Suarez though - he hit .198 with a OPS barely above .700 his last year in Cincy. Last season with Arizona he started off so poorly he was actually getting benched at one point for Blaze Alexander. Look at him now.
Can't wait for the august update when maybe only one of the guys originally in august comes back and we push everyone down a spot Injuries happen , but I will be upset if crane doesn't significantly flip the Astros medical staff Clearly we brought Isaac back to early , yordan appears to have been mismanaged... And that's just what we know about . We've gotten really lucky with how good our AAA callups have been Some of that must speak to our game planning and coaching . Yordan , Pena , and paredes are our 3 best players and somehow we are still at the top of our division. Hunter Brown is clearly showing some signs of slowing down , I unfortunately predict he will be the next one to get hurt. I can't view the results of the season so far without thinking there has been quite a lot of good luck (in performance) on our side . Meyers and Pena were carrying us when healthy and both are having season way above expectations. Hunter Brown was performing way above average I think we could really come crashing down. Good think walker has stepped up as of late , but I'm not very confident about next year
McGee won a batting title, maybe 2? I can’t remember. Bryce Harper is another good example You can pick whoever you want, my point is many good hitters have down years.
Yeah, McGee won two but they were the outliers in his career. He was an average hitter than had two great years. I still wouldn’t rule out Yainer getting hot this season. He’s going to keep getting ABs regardless how good Caratini has been since everyone is hurt.
Willie McGee is not someone I will ever consider to be an average player. I don’t care what his career ops+ is. He won batting titles and was a WS champ. Wasn’t he the first guy to win a batting title in both leagues? He was a great fielder too. For his era, Mcgee was a damn good player (most years). I have not ruled out Diaz getting hot this season.
...and Dana said they'd have drafted him as a RF and he's now a RF for the Astros. I'm sure he can play 3B (assuming he still has an IF glove) in a pinch. If they're serious about a move, you give him a whole offseason to acclimate.
Living in Memphis I was Cardinal fan growing up. I loved the McGee and Coleman years and all that speed. My favorite player of all time is Bob Gibson. Now I’m a die hard Astro fan, but nothing can really compare to your boyhood enthusiasm.
McGee is legendary uggo dude looked just like E.T. as far as baseball, he was much better than Coleman. They were a good speedy duo though
If the tarp machine hadn't tried to kill Coleman in the NLCS, the Cards win that WS instead of losing to KC in 7 games. btw, McGee in '85: .353 BA, 216 H, 18 3B, 8.2 WAR (all led the NL) MVP, GG, SS
No doubt. Coleman's first few years (23-28 y.o.) are pretty hilarious on the bases though: 110/107/109/81/65/77 stolen bases (led the league each year) with a whopping OBP of .326 and 115 CS
Apparently Dubin throwing BPs now. Would be really nice if he makes it back without incident - bullpen needs a quality right handed option and he just makes us so much deeper.
The previous Yordan quotes about him needing to rest it but also needing to play make me sad. I wish they'd just let him sit until the hand doesn't hurt anymore. I feel like they're just prolonging the issue by having him "going through a hitting progression" with the existing injury lingering.
