    • Cost of Living and Purchasing Power: While California boasts a high GDP (ranking as the 4th largest economy in the world, surpassed only by the United States, China, and Germany in April 2025), its exceptionally high cost of living, particularly for housing, significantly reduces the purchasing power of many residents. This means that despite high incomes, a large portion of those earnings goes towards basic necessities, leaving less disposable income than in areas with lower costs of living.
    • Income Inequality: California exhibits significant income inequality, meaning that the benefits of its high GDP are not evenly distributed among the population. The top earners' increasing share of income can skew the overall GDP figures, making the economic situation appear more prosperous than it is for lower and middle-income residents. This can mask the struggles faced by many Californians who are facing the high cost of living with stagnant wages.
    • Limitations of GDP as a Sole Indicator: GDP measures the market value of goods and services produced, but it doesn't account for several factors that impact the true well-being of a population, such as:
      • Informal economic activity: Unpaid work, like childcare or volunteer services, isn't included in GDP calculations.
      • Environmental costs: Resource depletion and environmental damage are not subtracted from GDP, even though they represent a long-term cost to society.
      • Quality of life factors: Leisure time, health outcomes, and social cohesion are not reflected in GDP figures, which can lead to an incomplete picture of societal well-being.
In essence, while California's high GDP showcases its robust economic output, looking solely at this metric can be misleading.

As a native Texan, let me ask Gemini about Texas under Perry and Abbott :

    1. Quality of Life:

    • Overall Quality of Life: Multiple sources, including CNBC and WalletHub, have ranked Texas among the worst states for overall quality of life. This is often attributed to factors like a high percentage of uninsured residents, limited access to healthcare (especially primary care physicians and mental healthcare providers), and high crime rates.

    • Social Issues: Restrictive abortion laws, policies impacting the LGBTQ+ community, and voting rights have also been cited as contributing to a lower quality of life ranking.

    2. Education:

    • Educational Attainment: Texas consistently ranks low in the percentage of residents with a high school diploma, associate degrees, and bachelor's degrees. Some studies have placed Texas in the bottom 10 or even near the very bottom (e.g., 49th for high school diploma attainment).

    • Public School Quality: While some individual cities may do moderately well, the state as a whole has faced criticism for its public school system. A significant portion of Texas schools receive D or F performance ratings, particularly those with higher rates of low-income students.

    • Least Educated Metro Areas: Several Texas metropolitan areas, such as Brownsville-Harlingen and McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, have been ranked among the least educated in the entire U.S.

    3. Healthcare:

    • Uninsured Population: Texas has the highest percentage of uninsured residents in the nation.

    • Access to Care: The state ranks poorly in the number of primary care physicians and mental healthcare providers per capita.

    4. Affordability and Cost of Living:

    • While some aspects of Texas might be seen as affordable, studies have also placed it low in overall affordability, with concerns about property taxes and the cost of living not always being offset by other factors.
    5. Other areas:

    • Homeownership Rate: Texas has one of the lowest homeownership rates nationwide.

    • Average Work Week: Texans tend to have some of the longest average work weeks in the country.

    • Safety: Texas has been ranked poorly in terms of overall safety.

It's important to note that different studies use varying methodologies and metrics, so rankings can differ. However, the themes of poor performance in education, healthcare access, and overall quality of life are recurrent.

add whatever metric you like, let's compare.

how about the number of Nobel-Prize winning research conducted by its universities,
    • over 300 for Calif
    • less than 50 for Texas
    or

the number of Olympic Games hosted
    • 5 for Calif
    • zero for Texas

Wow lots of people seem to be moving here so they can experience this low quality of life. As a native Texan, I haven't found this article to be true.

I'm sorry you were ignorant about our crime stats, education metrics, and health metrics. I am glad I could enlighten you more about the state you live and show you that the "low cost of living" comes with it's own costs.

All this high population growth requires investment and infrastructure, otherwise the quality will dip. Texas has decided to invest heavily in toll roads so our transportation costs are higher.

i know that Tinman, stricken with inferiority complex, is not representative of Texans,

Overwhelmingly, the Texans i meet in Calif are confident / driven by a "can do" attitude,
making a seamless transition to the Calif way of life.

People forget that California was much like Texas pretty much from the 1950s-2000s with massive population and economic growth.

Texas is already seeing the effects of massive population growth.
