no doubt he’s a better off ball player right now, which is unfortunate given his size. But so was Fred and he ultimately developed the on ball skills. I’m hopeful but certainly not a sure thing he develops those chops.
Negative. Reed's summer league teammates are straight garbage...didnt have much help out there. Reed will serve his role well as backup point guard and spot up shooter with KD out on the floor. If Reed plays good defense then Holiday won't see the floor. Observing his rookie season, Reed has one of the highest IQ on our team...going into his 2nd season where he'll get more playing time. In my opinion, there 3rd season is a great gauge to determine the trajectory of a player's career.
Some fans may throw up in their mouths a little, but I think Sheppard's role this year could be similar to what JJ Barea did for the Dallas Mavericks during their championship run. Barea's even smaller than Sheppard, but he compensated with a whole lot of quickness and energy, as well as making some timely shots. He made his share of mistakes, too, so his playing time was limited. And he was in a strictly complementary role, next to Jason Terry playing some of his best basketball. For this role, though, Sheppard would have to show a lot more quickness and aggressiveness. Also, he would have to be playing with another ball-handler and primary offensive option, which the Rockets don't currently seem to have in the second unit.
I don't doubt Reed's talent or IQ, but Ime is gonna do Ime things like overplay the vets and not develop someone like Reed when we already have FVV. It will take an injury to FVV for Reed to get good developmental minutes.
This is not the old nba. It doesn't matter how many shots if you are scoring more than a point per shot. Even at 10/25 his ts% was over 50%. It was more the other things he did in that game that was impressive. 7 stocks. The passing.
Look at FVV his rookie season and his year 2. Make it make sense? Top 3 pick has higher expectations then undrafted rookie so fvv had time to physically develop and learn his role. Reed was never a come in and shine player.he needs 3 years

Not gonna happen. JJ is tough, willing to defend Lebron in the finals. Reed, on the other hand, is just timid
He's unselfish but he was allowed to make decisions at Kentucky. On the Rockets last year he just passed the ball and got out of the way. There is a difference between unselfish and having a small role. The former is the ability to make decisions that make the team better at the expense of personal stats, someone like Haliburton. The latter are players like PJ Tucker or DFS that just stand in the corner and shoot 3s when open. Reed was much more towards the latter on last year's Rockets
If you expect Reed to be a star then IMO he is too small but if we expect him to be a backup and eventually FVV successor his height is fine. If he can grow an inch or two like Sengun he will have star potential.
I don’t think he’s timid, he just is used to playing a certain way and doesn’t have the mentality right now. He’s not a TJ McConnell or even Cason Wallace. I still don’t get why he refuses to play defense straight up and always cheats
Reed doesn't have a fast first step. And he doesn't have crafty handles (can be improved if he works on it). That's why he has difficulty getting past his defender one on one even against SL defenders. He can still be effective but he needs good screens. On defense, his foot speed will be a problem. But he has wicked hands and he does not give up on plays. He recovers and is often able to strip or block from behind.
His previous experience in college and SL where he is the most or one of the most athletic guys one the court. Look at his stocks and deflections he always plays aggressive defense and gets results that way. We will have to see if he can continue to do so in the NBA.
Like i said man e doesn't play straight up and this is disappointing. It's been discussed on here before and in his scouting reports. He goes for highlight steals and blocks etc. He is too occupied with jumping lanes and reaching for steals instead of just staying with his assignment. He has done this his whole career in college until now. Had a couple steals this way today. It's a boom or bust type defense that just isn't sound. This is why he lets guys blow by him or messes up the perimeter rotation. He needs to stand his ground, get low, move his feet and fight thru screens. there was a baseline play today he got screened but went under instead of over and allowed a wide open corner 3. stuff like this he can clean up. let's hope he does at some point this year.
