Right, I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm saying that the guys looking up to him is a good sign about Reed and the way he carries himself. My point is that it isn't that players look up to anyone they think that's good, guys earn that. If Reed has earned that from these dudes that's a good thing not something to worry about him having an ego like that other poster said.
Well, Reed is a high draft pick and is on the real NBA team. These other guys are HOPING for a chance to get their feet into the NBA. So in that sense, it's natural that they would "look up to" him as someone they aspire to become. If it means more than that, such as what you suggest (leadership, personality, etc.) then it will be a good sign for Reed's success for his NBA career.
I agree with the concern. But I also think that now that he's got a year under his belt he would understand that losing 3-10 against an All-NBA defender is an improvement from losing 0-10. And heaven forbid if he would ever lose 5-10. That would probably feel like he just walked on the moon. I think Reed has the EQ to see the importance of losing "less badly" against a defender of Amen's caliber. I hope he does. My bigger worry, and not completely unfounded, is if he goes into summer league and lays eggs. That would be a bigger hit to the confidence I think. Both his and the coaching staff's.
I think most sane people understood what "look up to meant". He's the unquestioned leader of that summer league team. Theres no if ands or buts and its not really a reasonable discussion point. He's not only the best player, but hes also the pg/floor general. The summer league coach talked about this as did Reed.
That's because he's actually on the 15-man roster and has the staff's blessing to lead the summer league team. No surprise there.
Might help him Why do you keep responding to my posts if you don’t respect my views? I already told you I don’t respect anything you say on this site. To answer your questions: These players shouldn’t have to do anything. What has Sheppard done in this league? He was not a regular rotational player as the coaching staff did not deem him to be good enough to play consistent minutes. I already mentioned he was a lottery pick with a lottery salary. You are saying money from a rookie lottery comtract is what other players should “look up” to not ability or merit. If Sheppard or any fan feels others should look up to him rather than his on court performance then this is entitlement and not merit. All those players paid their dues just like him and some have had more experience. They should not have to “look up” to a player who has not done much in this league. Likewise he is paying his dues bouncing in and out of G league getting benched etc. they all pay their dues.
I was specifically responding to a fan that said these players “should” look up to him. I said nothing about worrying. Look up to means someone who aspires to be something. Idolization. You can respect someone without “looking up” to.
No. Words have meaning. That’s a condescending and poor choice of words. Jackson said he wanted to see growth. He said nothing about Reed being the “best player”. What if Reed thought he was the “best” player. Lack of humility is how people fail. As a PG your role is to be a leader. You can respect a leader without “looking up” to someone. Considering he has not much to back up in terms of performance why would other players “look up” to him? If we are talking about leadership and if he earned it and they respect him and his approach then great. But I was only responding to a fan and the context given.
If a second year player can't dominate the Summer League before they ever play, you might as well cut them.
Exactly. Or on the complete opposite end, Ty Lawson, who was a flaming bust in summer league but ended up having a very good NBA career. If alcohol problems didn't plague him, he might have had a great NBA career.
This is a basketball forum, so presumably all of us have at least touched a ball and played some pickup at some point in our lives. When you encounter a guy who completely outclasses everyone on the court, it's usually obvious even during warmups. It is 100% natural to give those guys respect on the court, between games, and yes, even "look up to them." Doesn't matter what you accomplished in your past, when someone is simply more talented than you ever will be and you see it in person, you just know. It would actually be a pretty bad sign for Reed if everyone on the team didn't immediately recognize his talent and defer to him, because that means the other players on the team aren't seeing that gap in talent and are thinking "this guy isn't that good, why are they paying him, I can take him." Or he's a zero-charisma weirdo who the rest of the guys can't relate to, despite his talent. Finally, on the money side, if I was going to Vegas on a work trip, I damn well am gonna defer to the guy who just made partner and got a huge signing bonus+raise, is making a ton more than I am, and who I want to pick up the check at dinner and at any after-hours entertainment.
Certain extreme levels of stupid should be countered so that an outside observer wouldn't mistakenly believe there was any level of agreement with it, tacit or otherwise. You frequently provide us with that level of stupidity when you attempt to give your basketball opinions, so i respond to them. It's nothing personal.
I took the "look up to" as he's their PG/QB and likely taking a leadership role on the SL Team, which I would expect if I'm the coach. That sounds like a good observation and should make us all feel good going into SL.
Its a great observation and most people who are actually rooting for him to succeed would take it as such.
