2 open roster spots but only enough cap space for one vet minimum. Clear need for SG depth that can shoot Melton, Burks, Brogdon, Mathews, Seth, Shamet, Beauchamp *Lillard, Beasley*
If we were getting Brogdon back, Shams would’ve mentioned it with the Cam trade, right? That’s who I want. Smart playmaker, good shooter, played under Ime in the past, and shouldn’t complain about a limited role due to his injury history.
Seems obvious that management is very happy with Udoka and asked Ime “what do you need to win it all?” The last roster spot will go to a guard who can play defense and shoot the 3. I hope it’s Melton. He will probably start the year slow, but be ready for the playoffs.
I’m really excited as the roster stands. I think we are the 2nd best team in the west. But I’m concerned about our ball handling - whileFred is excellent at taking care of the ball and getting us set offensively, we can’t expect him to stay healthy all year. Behind him we have Reed and Amen. Amen’s handles really need to improve in order to take on lead guard duties, and Reed needs to prove he’s nba-ready, let alone someone who can run an offense. Do I have confidence in those 3? Yes, but there’s a lot of risk not having another guy who can take on lead guard duties if needed. Holiday is not really one of those guys; he’s an undersized shooting guard. So I have some concern about backcourt depth and ball handling. But we have our team: Sengun/Adams/Capela Bari/DFS/Jeff Green KD/Tari/Tate Amen/Holiday FVV/Reed That’s 13. Nate Williams non-guaranteed is #14 although I’d prefer to replace him another guard at the min. I think we’ll keep that 15th spot open going into the season.
The first 13 are stacked. Whoever is in that 14th spot got to have the best team attitude and chemistry, practice guy, etc, because this is what this position will bring to the club.
im happy overall with the team. As I pointed out, I’m concerned about the backcourt, and specifically ball handling. I also would have gone for a guard instead of resigning Capela. But overall our team is potentially the deepest in the league and we can make any needed adjustments at the trade deadline.
Melton is a defensive hound, a likely candidate! I like the idea of offering Beauchamp a 2-way. Decent defender, great athlete and improving shooter. Not a playmaker for others, but would be a great get as a 2way
Melton is going to be way too expensive. We are going to stay under the 1st Apron unless we do something big at the deadline. I like the idea of Dinwiddie or Brogdon as Reed insurance. We only have about 4m to offer. Brogdon might be a little out reach as well.
I’m worried now with Whitmore out and the primary guard rotation being FVV, Amen, Reed that Ime about to run Amen in the ground with 40 minutes a game I really hope Reed can step up you trading Cam gonna look silly if he looks decent with more time next year
All Sheppard ever needed was consistent legitimate playing time, now he'll have that.... unless Ime goes full Ime and gives those minutes to Aaron Holiday and JaeSean Tate instead.
I don't think they are gonna be that pricey, who else has more than the minimum available? We cant offer PT but at least a shot to compete for a role.
Melton made 15m last year. Someone will come up with something like 5-7m. We might be able to get brogdon. I don’t think we are going over the first apron for reed insurance.
Fair enough. We do need another shooter in my eyes tho. Maybe garrison matthews? Aaron holiday is the reed insurance
We cannot go over the apron. It is not allowed per CBA because we used the MLE. And I don't think we can make an offer over vet minimum anyway? Melton made $$ to rehab last year. Often players coming back from long injuries take a small deal to work themselves back into shape. I do agree, he would probably be able to earn more than we have to offer though
None of those guys like Melton or Brogdon are going to sign here to be a 14th man. They still want to be at the top end of someone's rotation and have aspirations of making (significantly) more than the minimum in future years. They could sign for Milwaukee and maybe even be a starter on a playoff team. We'll sign someone who is happy to be stay ready guy (like a Delon Wright, Alec Burks, Landry Shamet, Dalano Banton type) or just keep Nate Williams / give his roster spot to someone who'll sign a non guaranteed contract with the latest possible guarantee date. If it really looks like the lack of backup ball handling is going to be an obstacle in the playoffs, they'll try to solve that mid-season via trade for a backup ball handler using the ~$2M in room we have below the first apron + one of our minimum contracts or one of Capela / Adams as matching salary
2-way contracts? with Roddy and McVeigh gone it looks like Dante is the remaining player on a 2-way contract. Of course that could change before the season starts. we just signed Kevon Harris so that’s one of the 2-way spots. We signed Cam Matthews to an exhibit 10 contract so he could end up with a 2-way spot. With the addition of Mo King I’m interested to see if he’ll play in Summer League. Assuming he’s not waived he’s another potential contender for a 2-way contract. so feels like those are the contenders for our three 2-way slots. Does that sound right?
