What is Stone's incentive for offering significantly more than he needs to? Do you think Stone is running a charity? There are always bidding wars and sometimes the winner ends up being the loser. But rarely doesn't somebody bid against themselves. At current, Stone is managing the cap situation just fine so not sure why some of ya'll are butt hurt about FVV's contract size. It's like ordering an entire pizza and you send it back because one slice doesn't have enough peperoni. The situation is under control. The rest of the pizza has the right amount of peperoni.
...umm, It looks like Reed is going to be getting 25-30 mpg (maybe more) to start the season or very soon thereafter. To get FVV down to 15 mpg, Reed would need to be playing 45-50 mpg. I don't see Reed playing that much.
Would have let FVV walk and test the market, would never have signed him for 50m - he isn't worth it. DD
I think FVV plays about 33m, Amen about 35min, and Reed if he shows well early 25min or so. The only backcourt combo we should never see on the court is FVV and Reed or Holiday and anybody, if injuries don’t force a change. If Reed sh*ts the bed, we will make a deadline trade. Maybe Cam surprises us and can get into the rotation, but I believe he is destined to be traded before the season or early on.
Except the Rockets are going to be great next season, and FVV is worth it. Hot Take Alert: The Reed-FVV-Amen-Durant-Sengun lineup is going to be really fun.
They would be great with someone else at PG too - there were other PGs out there that were cheaper and better than FVV, imho. FVV is not going to be any deciding factor on this year's team, he is just a neutral player. DD
I agree with this, but Fred is going to play SG on offense this season. The addition of Durant, Amen’s continued improvement, and adding DFS to the roster is going to move Fred off the ball and still provide excellent PG defense. We are going to be great as long as Durant, Sengun, and Amen stay healthy. We still have gobs of trade assets if any of the others fail.
It’s easy to claim that FVV is a “neutral” player, but the stats don’t really back up this claim, and I’ve been really critical of FVV. His on/off last season (+3.2) was third on the team among the players who played over 1000 minutes - only Bari and Sengun had better on/off stats.
It's a good deal. The contract next season will be worth ~$22 mil in 2025 NBA cap money and there is a lot of value in continuity. I'm not sure who or where this mythical guard who can play plus defense and run an offense was in free agency......
There were not PGs better than FVV that the Rockets had early Bird rights. The Rockets utilized zero resources on guards this offseason other than Tilman's money that he couldn't spend on other guards. Also, FVV will be gone in a year or 2 to make room for Reed. I think Ty Jerome is the most reasonable alternative to FVV, he signed for three years, and he likely can't play with Reed. If one is trying to win, FVV is likely the best choice. If one is trying to give Reed plenty of PT to develop, FVV is likely the best choice as he can play off-ball and defend up a position. Last season shows that, at a minimum, FVV has good enough PG skills that it allows other Rockets to win games (i.e., that isn't neutral). Even if it is neutral, neutral is better than bad enough to prevent others from winning. I expect FVV's stats are going to look a lot better with Jalen Green gone, and a star to handle the end of the clock shots. I do not believe in going full Silas and removing all the veterans because young guys can't beat them out. I want Reed to beat FVV out at some point in the next 2 years. You will get your wish that FVV won't be a Rocket some time in the next two years. It is just going to take Reed earning it.
A lot of that depends upon Ime making the right choice on that, let's see how it goes. I am not saying FVV is terrible I am saying he is OVER PAID.....we could have signed someone else with his money. DD
He wouldn’t have gotten 25 on the market, but I’ve come to believe his contract was fine. If Reed succeeds, he is a 25m trade piece. He is a fine defender at pg. if Ime plays him off ball he will be fine as a spot up shooter. Amen, Durant, and Sengun have the playmakers covered. Unlike others I think Reed will have the same off ball roll as FVV if he takes his job, at least until he can prove himself as a playmaker. Ime has always said he wanted multiple guys that could create for other players including Sengun. The days of traditional PG’s is waining.
