Different injury, but a data point on thumbs:

Scherzer went on the IL March 30 for thumb inflammation and made his return to MLB yesterday. I'm sure you could look up his rehab timetable re: bullpens/ liveBP/rehab starts/etc...

 

I stand by that he just needs consistent playing time to be a decent major leaguer

when phillies barrel up the ball, they barely get any hit.

however, whenever the exit velo is trash, they get hits left and right.
