Trump needed to rescue Netanyahu who thought he could overthrow the Iranians in a 10 day bombing campaign, and Iran had said they wanted to end the conflict the day before but would not stop until Israel did. It's been tit-for-tat since Day 1.
Trump gives Bibi and his conservative backers an offramp because it's optically a strong response. Trump gives Iran an off ramp because the conflict stops. Trump makes it look like he is a hero domestically (spoiler he isn't).
