Coach likes Reed. He might even get 14 per in 60 games this year. Wait a minute. That would mean Fred cannot get 52 in 48

Would Daryl Morey be interested with Fred VanVleet ?

The third pick for VJ Edgecombe or Egor Demin.

We saw what happened when we didn't have FVV. It was so disappointing that Reed didn't at least look serviceable as a rookie.

I'd extend him at the right price, but players usually don't re-sign for less money unless it is to allow the team sign someone else. Most likely just pick-up the option and hope Reed Sheppard shows massive improvement in year two so we can afford to let FVV walk.

KD's contract really is not part of the equation, IMO. It was basically an equal exhange of salary. Now his extensión could cause some issues after next year.

For the FO to go into second apron territory for FVV, they must really believe in this roster. That being said, still do not see it happening. Hell, I hope not. Putting a second morgage on the house for Freddy would be something.

How much of a cut would Fred need to take to give us the ability to sign a decent FA?

Stop it. James Harden is not a FA. He still has another year left on his contract.

If you decline FVV's team option, he is an unrestricted FA, correct? So if they let him "test the waters", why would he resign with the Rockets? He'd probably feel slighted and then decline any Houston offers, unless it's an overpay ...which defeats the purpose.

Just renegotiate FVV and move on. Stage 3 of the rebuild has commenced. The championship window is now open. Now is not the time to be cheap.

Right but FVV is not a good PG, he is a good backup PG, or a starter on a non-contending team.

We really could use a much better playmaker there.

I think we see a rebound year from Fred and he is the perfect person to continue to mentor Amen and Reed.
we either want to pick up his option or preferably renegotiate and extend because we will need those dollars for a trade at some point.

I may be crazy. I think I would let Fred walk and try to sign Chris Paul. Even maybe Dennis Schroder. I think there are some free agent point guards out there that pass first. Vanvleet has never really been a high assist guy and when defenses full court press him usually somebody else is bringing the ball up the court. Just my opinion.

No team is perfect. You roll with what you got ...and he ain't that bad. Plus he's never shying away from pressure, which is what you need to make a run at a championship.

FVV ain't perfect but there isn't an obvious upgrade. Hopefully Reed has a break-out year.

Only 2 teams have cap space in Pistons/Nets.

Pistons (19 mill cap space) have Cade and Jaden Ivey (who took a big step before getting injured) filling the lead guard role. Fred would fit well with Cade, JBB and their teams direction, but I have no idea if they’d want to spend all of their cap on him just to have to bench Ivey or play a very small back court.

Nets (up to 60 mill cap space) The Nets specifically traded Bridges and the Suns picks to get BACK their own 2025 and 2026 picks back and TANK, they have zero incentive to make now move on Fred like the Rockets did 2 years ago. I would be shocked if Fred was a target.

It's entirely plausible that we may only be competing with MLE offers for Fred (4/60 million / 15 mill per)

I think a good will offer for him would be the exact contract we gave Dillon. With Amen and Sengun development, with Durants acquisition, he’s going to have a similar role to Dillon of 2 years ago as the 4th man.

Dillons contract was a 4 year 86 million declining deal with 4 mill of incentives (For Fred, we could do something like 60+ games played, 2nd round appearance worth half a mill each per season.

This would be 100% competitive to any offer DET could make, blows a MLE deal out the water. Short of the Nets swooping making a stupendous Rockets 2023 like offer, this should be considered a very respectable and competitive offer for Fred this FA.

In a different market, if Fred didn't come off a down year, and if we didn't make a trade to become contenders with looming tax and cap considerations, I could see Fred being wanting 30 mill per, but thats not how things shook out.

Getting KD actually gives us more leverage to sign FVV to a team friendly deal because KD gives us championship hopes and the other teams with championship aspirations can't/won't pay FVV the amount he's seeking.
In addition, his production didnt match his pay so yeah we got the leverage.

He will not show up when he is needed the most. I would have wanted to keep Jalen if I want to see that.

Despite his flaws, we were better when he was playing last year. It was tough when he was injured. And while I'm not a fan of Durant or adding him to our team, his elite shooting/scoring ought to make things a lot easier for everybody else on offense. So hopefully we'll see Fred's shooting percentages regress to the mean some. They were awful last season.

    Schröder is under contract.

CP3 is FA so he might be available but geez, talk about an injury risk. If you trying to make a championship run, not sure why you pin your hopes on that dude, especially since the Rockets already have 37yo KD. I think that's too risky.

The best case scenario is FVV mentors Reed and then Reed comes on strong.

If we sign him to the team option, can we trade him at the deadline? That could get us a major upgrade

Trade his trash ass. They need his salary to match and need to get more top end talent

I understand, but 20 to 35 million versus vet minimum. Vanvleet missed 20 something games last year. I was just stating that would be my move. Dennis Schroeder, Malcom Brogdon, and others could come as a cheaper deal. If the plan is to get Reed ready then all of those guys are great veteran's to do so. Again my opinion and I understand the risks.

Schröder is unrestricted and the pistons are trying to keep Beasley. So Schröder maybe a casualty
