I mean to be fair the Red Sox also butchered the whole situation with the Bregman signing. They should have talked to Devers first about it instead of lying about Bregman moving to 2B then showing up and only taking grounders at 3B lol

They didn’t even need to sign Bregman either. Should have used that money on another starter and the bullpen.

    They are thrilled with Bregman.

I have read multiple posts from various insiders and watched vidros/podcasts. They love the impact he has had to their culture.

Yes, they need pitching, but signing Alex is the most positively impactful thing they could have done this offseason.

And as good as Devers is as a hitter, getting his money off the books, and his attitude out of the clubhouse is also a big positive.

Now they need to use the money saved to bring in pitching, and I will consider the trade a net positive. But the foundation is set.

I’m sure they are thrilled with him and don’t necessarily disagree with anything you’re saying. All I’m saying is they didn’t handle the situation well either and they would be a better team right now had they signed say Max Fried instead of Bregman.

They’ve also screwed themselves with the negotiations with Bregman coming up this offseason - now there is no chance they can let him walk. He’s going to opt out and they’ll have to pay up.

And it might be a positive for the future but you can’t tell me that trade helps their chances this season.

I agree that they weren't also very , and possibly equalky responsible for the dramatic train wreck that it became.

I think that the chances that it helps this season are certainly less than 25%, but not 0.

If there was 0 chance of him playing 3b or 1b, and was limited to DH.

Duran, Abreu, Anthony, Refsnyder, and Yoshida ( once healthy) are all still on the roster for the DH and corner OF spots. Mayer will need a place when Bregman returns.

None if them are as good as Devers, but they are all quality MLB hitters so its not like they are finding some AAAA slob to replace him.

The reduction from Devers to the replacement, is not as bad as it would be for most teams.

It appears that the Red Sox told him he was their 3B and then reneged on that promise.

Depends on how much you value defense and leadership.

BTW, they used Devers as the trade chip to get more pitching and avoid Devers 10-5 rights.

If they were so worried about his contract and the 10-5 rights, they could have traded him this winter and then signed Bregman without the drama. Also could have gotten more pitching.

Instead, they mishandled the entire situation, waited until after their team sweeps their hated rival getting them back firmly in the WC race, and then traded him. Incredibly bad optics IMO and all they’ve done is further pissed off their fan base.

In the end, Bregman was playing great for them at 3B and Devers didn't want to be there anymore. They got rid of his contract and years tied up. They can use that money to resign Breg later.

Optics LMAO, you cant run a franchise worrying about if a trade will piss off the fanbase.

They got pitching they needed, now is that pitching actually good pitching is the biggest question. They've got the bats to replace Devers.

I’m not only talking about optics with the fan base…I’m also talking about the optics within the team hence the waiting until after they got back into the race. Once again the team got worse this season regardless what y’all want to say. Until Bregman comes back, that lineup doesn’t have anyone in the middle of it that scares you. Bregman’s job just got a lot harder too now that he doesn’t have Devers hitting in front of him.

They got pitching they needed? They sent the better pitcher they got down to AAA. I’m sure Hicks 6.91 ERA is going to be a HUGE help though.

And yes, they should also worry about the fan base considering all the bullshit they’ve been doing since 2018. Their attendance has been way down the past several years compared to where it was literally every season from 2004-2019.

Not sure how 10-5 played into it since he'll have 8 years of service time after this season.

I thought he had 9 years of service.

Anyways 8 or 9 years he was getting close to 10-5.
