Amen was a PG in High School and travel teams. Amen as a NBA PG is still a work in progress. I would not bet against him, but he may be years away from being a starting NBA PG.

Fred has value, but the things Fred is good at like setting up the offense and directing traffic can be found at a much cheaper price. The Rockets seem chaotic when Fred misses time because there is nobody else on the team that does those things well, but they can be found on the cheap on the open market.

People point to things like Fred's low turnover rate... which is easy to do when you are never involved in the actual plays. He has an extremely low usage rate, especially for a "top" PG, and especially one that is the highest paid player on the team... by $10M! Once he dribbles the ball up the court and gets everyone into position, he steps back and lets others create and shoot. No risk of turnover there. (Yes, there is some hyperbole there. Calm down.)

This team needed Fred to get to this point. Now that young players are stepping up, and getting paid to step up (deserved or not), it's time for Fred to step back. We can get the things he's good at elsewhere and we can no longer sink large chunks of the cap into him now that the players he has been playing alongside are going to command larger chunks themselves.

As the players like to say when they take a sack of cash from a new team and leave the old team behind, "No hard feelings, this is a business."

How about signing CP3? He only made 11M last season and he played all 82 games for the first time in about 10 years.

We don’t need a pg. Everybody saying Amen is not a pg is talking out of their ass. We don’t know, because even though that is the position he is best suited for and has played his entire life at he has not been given a chance at the position. If you never play it, you can’t prove it or improve at it. It is a ridiculous argument about someone who is acknowledged as a plus passer and can get into the lane at will to say he is not a pg and say FVV who is a sh*t distributor, can’t get into the lane, and an inconsistent shooter is a pg. The only stat he shines at is turnovers. I wouldn’t turn the ball over either if I just walked it up the court dribbled around the logo until 6 seconds are left on the shot clock and either chucked it up or gave it to someone else to chuck it up. At least acknowledge that our backcourt sucks and we need to make a change.

I was replying to the post that said there were cheaper options to do the same things Fred does well. CP3 is a good example.

Amen has been given opportunities to play PG when FVV was injured. He's not good at organizing the offense. He may very well be able to do that some day.

If we say around one year give or take, I could agree. But I wouldn't agree with years away to be honest.

He was drafted for his PG play at 4th and that was his natural position for years until the NBA. He was a work in progress as an NBA player overall, as are all rookies and developed into all defensive first team, learned at a rapid rate and played four positions this year, PG/SG and SF/PF which is amazing.

He will be able to play just about any position and averaged 16 pts 9 rebounds and 5 assists as a starter with lower usage and would likely average 6-7+ assists as a full time PG last year.

I don't have data for starting point guards league averages, but pretty sure he'd be okay on many teams there. Another full year of development give or take and he may even take over by then.

CP3 would be nice, especially with Reed playing more next season, but I don’t see CP3 wanting to reunite with Tillman, who he blames for being shipped off to OKC (which at the time was a rebuilding team). Just can’t see that. But he’d be a nice stopgap. I’m sure he’ll catch on with another contending team.

They can't trade FVV until they pick up his option

Because FVV is one of our consistent shooters. I'm not moving Amen to permanent main PG duties and letting FVV go until we have more consistent shooters to replace FVV. I would hope for a more team friendly deal and that is easier to trade along the time line.

He'll take a paycut based on his market. No other team is paying him $45M. You entice him by offering him more guaranteed money than the $45M he would make next season. Either accept the 1 year option and ride it out or offer him a 3-4 year deal at $20-25M a year. He only came here because we overpaid for his services and he could be the main piece to jumpstart into Phase 2. Now he's engrained into the Udoka culture and wants to stay but only if the guaranteed money makes sense for him.

I could see his offers being in the range of:
    3 years / $75M
    4 years / $88M

Sorry I need to get out of the habit of just replying to the last comment. I wasn’t intending to respond to you, but to the whole thread. I think most of your posts are well thought out and logical.

You opt into that deal and you package him and picks to get your star using leverage. Perfect huge contract to trade that expires

He HAS been given a chance at PG, both last season and this season, and it was bad.

Udoka is trying to win games, not develop players. Best case is you develop players while winning games. But he definitely isn't going to prioritize developing players over winning games.

As of now, Amen doesn't help win games starting at PG (yet).
