In many situations they are better. But I'm not sure they're twice as good. In any situation with the bases empty, they're basically the same.
With bases empty they are the same, but that’s it. Some singles can get a runner from 1st to 3rd so a single is better with a man on 1st than a walk. Unless Maldy is on 1st. Then you need 3, possibly 4 singles to score him.
If there’s a runner on second or third they’re more than twice as good. the only time a single isn’t better than a walk is when the bases are empty. that being said, I ****ing love walks, they almost always lead to good results. I’d love to see like a 10 year across the league stat showing the number of 3+ run innings as a result of 2+ walks in an inning compared to 2+ hits. I feel like the comparison would be close. But technically, singles are better in a ton of situations, money ball did such a crackpot job, dumbing down every bit of nuance to the ideology. and also, I don’t think they mentioned Tim Hudson, Barry Zito, or Mark Mulder even once. What a ****ing joke. Sorry for the semi-non-sequitur.
Mariners about to win 1-0 as well. Cal Raleigh another HR…ain’t no way that guy is about to hit 60 bombs this season
For sure. How many times do teams hit with men on base vs. empty? If I could figure out how to look those stats up I would. Just looking at Altuve (not saying he's representative) he's hit with men on 2700+ times in his career and bases empty 4700+ times. The other thing with the Astros, they are bottom of the league in stolen bases. As a team that gets on base fairly well, that's telling. The lack of speed on the bases certainly impacts runs scored in way not captured by OPS.
I was among them. And this time I agree with the move. I also agree King was the right move to start the inning. He's your 7th inning guy. You can't blow his confidence and change your entire plan because he has a bad outing. Lots of season left and you are going to need him. But coming off a terrible loss with the tying run on 2b you go with Abreu once it gets to that point.
What is better? It still counts doubles, triples, and HR more than singles. BA and SLG don't count walks at all OB% counts singles and HR the same What do you think is the best stat to judge that aspect of the game?
