Didn't see one up yet, but it's probably time to get this thread started. The 2025 MLB Draft will take place July 13 & 14 during the All-Star break in Atlanta. The Astros' first pick will be #21 overall. They will not have a second-round pick because they had to forfeit it after signing Christian Walker. Therefore, their second pick will be in the third round (95th overall). They were supposed to get a compensation pick after the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman... but they lost it after signing Walker. The Astros will have a bonus pool of $7,181,500, which is the fourth-smallest in this draft (the Padres, Mets, and Yankees have smaller pools). Here are the slot values for the first 9 picks: Round 1, Pick 21: $4,122,500 Round 3, Pick 95: $803,900 Round 4, Pick 126: $594,500 Round 5, Pick 156: $443,100 Round 6, Pick 186: $341,600 Round 7, Pick 216: $267,700 Round 8, Pick 246: $219,800 Round 9, Pick 276: $199,500 Round 10, Pick 306: $188,900 The first company Mock Draft went up yesterday and Jim Callis has the Astros picking Auburn OF/C Ike Irish. He's been playing more RF since breaking his scapula in March. Baseball America's second mock has them taking Coastal Carolina C Caden Bodine. The first mock had them taking Tennessee LHP Liam Doyle. They also did a staff draft and the in the latest one, whoever was picking for the Astros had them taking Illinois high school LHP Jack Bauer, whose fastball has been clocked as high as 102 mph. I have no clue about these kids.
Read a little about this draft and watched a few videos. This draft is very deep in HS infielders. I’m hopeful Houston can snag two really high upside SS in this draft. It seems serendipitous that the strength of the draft aligns with the weakness in Houston’s system. Guys I would like in rd one: SS Kayson Cunningham P Jack Bauer SS Nick Becker (under slot) IF Ryan Mitchell (under slot) SS Jordan Yost (under slot) Guys I’d like in rd 3: SS Dax Kilby SS Coy James IF Ethan Moore C/OF Taitn Gray IF Aiden West OF Brock Ketelson
Latest mocks... I'm trying not to overload this thread with posts filled with mock drafts Spoiler Xavier Neyens, 3B, Mount Vernon High School (Mount Vernon, Washington); Oregon State commit Latest company mock Spoiler Sean Gamble, 2B/OF, IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida via Des Moines, Iowa); Vanderbilt commit
One of you draftniks needs to explain to me how Boston gets the #33 pick for "competitive balance" reasons
I knew yall wouldn't let me down. That makes a hell of a lot more sense than MLB giving Boston "competitive balance" assistance Kiley McDaniel threw this out today, which is where I heard of the Boston pick situation. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id...iley-mcdaniel-first-pick-washington-nationals I regret not going to SA this year to see Kayson Cunningham play a couple of games
Cunningham would be a good pick imho. This draft is gonna be like 2020 and 2021 where Houston just doesn’t have the resources to pull out a normal range of talent; they’re gonna have to either go way under slot with their first pick, hoping to get 1-2 guys who fall overslot later, or expect to only get 2 premium talents from the entire draft (whereas the average team will get at least 4).
They also lost the 4th they got for Bregman compensation but yeah the net was losing their 2nd, but when you’re already picking late in the draft that’s a big loss.
Manfred has been trying to kill the Stros off since 2017. Keep on trying Robbie, because as long as the Stros have pitching, they aren't going anywhere. It amazes me that they've lost Javier/Garcia/France/Blanco/Wisnewski and still have enough pitching to be one of the better teams in MLB. Dana needs to make a deal for a Kikuchi type SP and find a way to add Lux.
I'm 99% sure they'll take a middle IF...I have no idea which one, college or HS...who the hell knows? This means they'll probably pick a LHP
My choices for the Astros 1st round pick. In no particular order. SS, Kayson Cunningham, Johnson HS, Texas CF, Max Belyeu, Texas CF, Ethan Conrad, Wake Forest
I don’t see how Cunningham slips to 21 at this point. LaViolette would be a very interesting risky pick. Gavin Kilen would be a high floor pick. Aloy is a solid all around value pick. Fien, Neyens, and Hammond are 3 good HS infielders that should be available when the Astros pick. I am hoping they work a big under slot deal with one of those guys then work the phones to line up a big overslot deal with their 3rd round pick. If they can get 2 of the top 75 talents in the draft it’ll be a success even if that means drafting mostly under slot guys in rounds 4-10. But really unless a team is drafting in the top 3 it’s pretty useless speculating on what will happen.
