Lance was awesome and a guy who any knowledgeable fan would want in the batter's box instead of Biggio and Bagwell once postseason began.

He just doesn't meet the threshold of the major running numbers -- namely, < 400 HRs, < 1500 RBIs (he's way off there). He also has 0 MVPs.

So YES, he needed a couple more prime years to increase those totals to have a more legit HOF case.

Counting stats don't mean didley when you are face of mlb for almost a decade. It was the definition of fame. He was a sure lock, but there is that one thing and that shadow is a nasty one. People hold grudges for a long time.

    Was this a joke?

Bagwell has 54% higher career WAR, his 7 year peak was 24% higher, and his per game was 33% higher. It’s not just counting stats, Bagwell had a higher peak as well.

Bagwell is borderline top 5 1B of all time. Berkman is well below the average hall of fame LF and maybe cracks someone top 25 list.

No offense to Berkman he was very good. Bagwell was at another level. The difference between an all star and an MVP.

It’s a lot closer than you think. Bagwell played longer. If Lance had 2 or 3 more peak years, I think he’s in the hall. Sure, Bagwell was better. Nobody denies that.

    career ops - Bagwell .948. Berkman .943
    Career ops+ - Bagwell 149 Berkman 144
Career BA- Bagwell .297 Berkman .293

Yeah just 2 more peak years and Berkman would be in.

If you want to talk about offense only then yes, they aren’t that far away, but that’s only part of baseball.

They both played for 15 years. Bagwell’s WAR on a per game basis was 33% higher. There’s a reason one is in the hall and one lasted one ballot.

Yep, offense is all I was talking about. Berkman was a corner outfielder a lot of his career. Bagwell had like 1300 more at bats than Berkman too. Bagwell has the higher peak and the longer prime.

He will drop below .300 AVG but will get to 300 HRs

The most egregious issue with Lance was that he didn’t get enough votes on one of the first ballots he was on to stay on… there’s little question that he’s a borderline HOF-type player, but he got kicked off the list much like any other role player or slightly above average player would, and that’s definitely giving his career accomplishments a disservice.

That being said, they were quick to not vote for him largely because of the way he composed himself, the way he interacted with the media, and the percieved lack of taking this game as seriously as one should/could (exemplified further when he got more out of shape/more fat/sucked in NYC… and then re-dedicated himself and was awesome for STL.

Altuve is a ****ing treasure. We are all lucky to have been able to enjoy watching him for all these years. It's a shame he's seen as a villain around the rest of the league, but I think that will soften with time.

One of the best 10 switch hitters in history (Mantle, Chipper, Beltran, Eddie Murray, Berkman....)

He was average/bad/terrible fielder, looked like a fat slob most of the time, and that obviously dragged him down for his entire career in the eyes of the BBWAA
