Dezenzo has a xwOBA of .331, meaning normalized for luck he’d have a ~120 wRC+. He needs to be playing everyday and should probably be hitting pretty high in the order. The Astros need to bite the bullet and just put Altuve back at 2B and accept his defensive shortcomings. He can be subbed out late in games and rested more frequently when Framber pitches. This offseason they can either move Cam to 3B and Paredes to 2B or move Cam to CF to open up RF for Dezenzo. It is funny how Houston went from having zero good OF to all of a sudden they have 3 guys who project to be above average (Meyers, Smith, and Dezenzo) plus Altuve and McCormick. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Astros trot out this lineup while Alvarez is out: Pena Paredes Altuve Dezenzo Diaz Smith Walker Meyers Caratini/Rodgers
I don't think Dezenzo is a better hitter than Diaz. Diaz has been bitten with worse luck, with an xSLG of .479 that's >100 points above his actual slugging %. I'd rather have Diaz hitting cleanup. But I agree that Dezenzo had played well and deserves to move up. Walker has also had below-average luck and is better currently than Smith. And Caratini - he's been consistently good since he got here. He's much better than Rodgers or Dubon and we know that Chas will play the whole season without getting 100 ABs. What about: Pena Paredes Altuve Diaz Dezenzo Caratini Walker Meyers Smith
In time, undoubtably. I think he's shown real improvement in May. By next season he's going to be top 5 - maybe sooner. He just needs consistent ABs and he'll figure it out.
Fish gonna fry in the kitchen Beans don't burn on the grill Took a whole lotta tryin' Just to get up that hill
Now? As of Today? (I hesitate because I may make people angry) He's statistically the 3rd best SS in MLB. He's been so, so good so far this year
And Yordan is statistically one of the worst DH’s in MLB. He’s been so bad, so far this year. Did I do that right?
I always heard it as “beans don’t burn in the kitchen” as the first line, and then the rest as you have it. I’m sure that’s not right either
Agreed. 3rd is in the "top 5" though. I always take "someone is a top _____ at whatever to be what's the worst number I could reasonably put them at that would make sense- b/c that number encompasses everything between that number and anyone ranked higher.
Wrote a blog post on things I love about watching the 2025 Astros. Please check it out and give me any notes. I've never done anything like this before- if you have anything constructive to say I'd love to hear it. If you like it let me know that too and share with any Astros friend you think might enjoy. Andrew is feverishly writing the things he hates about the Astros right now. That won't be wrong either.
