An 8 team playoff would have been perfect. Conference champions from the power 4 conferences and 4 at large bids. Seed based on rankings regardless of if they are champions or not.

You would be dangerously close to keeping Ohio st out this year if you did that. And really they are still going to take the highest group of 5 which would have left Ohio ST out of the playoffs having been bumped by conf winners Arizona St, Clemson and Boise.

the system is fine. Just base the bracket seeding on rankings and make sure the same conf champions make it in.

    I didn't say power 5, I said power 4. SEC, big 10, acc, and big 12.

So Indiana and Tennessee would have been out.

I got that but they aren’t going to drop the highest out of the other conferences. That’s just not happening. It shouldn’t either. The small conferences should get one spot for the highest ranked team to compensate with all the inherent bias toward the power 4.

8 or 12 is an improvement on 4.

12 is enough IMO but I'm fine if they increase to 16.

I think the playoff worked fine. They definitely need to not give automatic byes to conference champions - just seed them 1 through 12.

This article describes the transition of college football programs into NFL-style operations. It's a very good read IMO.

Very short version: Colleges are hiring GMs to structuralize and oversee departments including high school scouting/recruiting, transfer portal and NIL that mimic NFL teams and they are poaching NFL personnel to do so.

I love high drama like this at places I don't give a care about.

One Belichick family source adds: "There is deep worry for how detrimental Jordon can be for not just North Carolina but Bill's legacy, reputation — everything he has built and worked for over decades."

Might be some very unflattering revelations about Jordan Hudson are forthcoming. Popcorn time?

Huge news: 2025 @CFBPlayoff changes to straight seeding. Top 4 seeds get 1st-round byes regardless if it won a conference title, sources said. Conference champs still get auto-bids but are seeded based on ranking. This will be final year of 12-team playoff w/2026 playoff expanding to 14 or 16 teams, sources said. If straight seeding was in place last year the biggest differences: Texas & Penn State would have received 1st-round byes; Boise State drops from No. 3 to No. 9 seed; Arizona State from No. 4 to No. 11

Switching seeding to pure ranking regardless of a conference championship is an easy, obvious improvement for one year.

What they lock into place long-term next summer is what really matters. If the B1G and SEC get their wish for 4 guaranteed slots each, the SEC will use play-in games to determine the 3rd and 4th slots for their conference. The B1G might also.
