Fred VanVleet Club Option Aaron Holiday Club Option Steven Adams UFA Jeff Green UFA Jae'Sean Tate UFA N'Faly Dante RFA Jack McVeigh RFA
I want Fred back, but the expense is obscene. They desperately need shooters so wouldn't mind having Holiday back either. Ime loved the double bigs, so I can see them trying to keep Stephen. Green and Tate are both solid veterans that are good to have around, wouldn't mind having either of them back. The rest don't matter.
I'm going to assume this is specifically talking about our free agents since that's what you put on your OP. Picking up Holiday's small option is a no brainer. I would drop McVeigh, I just don't think he can keep up in the NBA. I would bring Dante back on a 2way, he could earn a spot down the line. I would offer Jeff Green a vets min if we have a spot left after all the moves. He's a locker room leader, not just a jokester, so he has value. Adams played well for us. But, the double big lineup was always a bit of a gimmick and it finally got exposed by the Warriors zone in game 7. I would bring Adams back on a small contract but I'm not breaking the bank for him. FVV had his shooting issues this season but I'd rather just use that as a bargaining chip to get him on a cheap deal. He was our most important player in the playoffs and clear leader. This team is so far away from true contention that I'd be willing to pick up his option if he agrees to an extension with a small figure in the out years. I like Tate and would keep him if possible but I feel like some other team might offer him a better contract. And, the Rockets have to accept we're loaded at his position. But, maybe summer trades change that.
I think we've completed Phase 1 of the rebuild with #2 Place finish and a competitive Rd1 playoff push. As I look at Phase 2, I think we have to look at our core and decide what we need to build around them. Honestly, I'm not emotionally attached to any of our FAs. I can see the case for exercising option, declining option or reworking as extension for FVV. His value as our leader has to be factored into the equation, but also weighed against perhaps better options. Exercising his option could also facilitate a bigger trade and maybe the best way he can help us. Adams renaissance was an exhilarating ride and keeping him should be considered with other options, but like with FVV there has to be thorough cost benefit analysis done and weighed against other paths. Uncle Jeff and Tate played useful, but small roles, not opposed to either on roster filler deals. Holiday, I'm pretty sure we can get better. Wouldn't mind keeping Dante to continue to develop. Jack can shoot, but will never see the court.
If no Fred, davion mitchell. Can come off the bench, can penetrate better than fred (albeit he wont be getting many points in the paint) and facilitate. Also can play offball and shoot. Plays like he wants to win.
FVV 4 years 120 million seems reasonable to me. Lots of other teams will be trying to get him after his performance in the playoffs. Other teams also won't have to rely on him completely to generate offense like we did because of bum Jalen Green. FVV role is to hit timely threes, be a leader and create as a secondary offensive playmaker. We didn't sign him to be our Anthony Edwards or Kevin Durant. We only have one hole to plug. FVV _____ Dillon Brooks Amen Thompson Alpi Sengun
Adams should be retained his ability to play as a double big and also serve as a backup to Sengun cant be underestimated. Tate can basically play 4 positions under Ime so if he doesnt get better offers why not keep him for depth. Holiday I think we can do better. He is really an undersized SG you would hope 2nd year Reed is better in every way. I would look at FAs in the market like Tyus Jones, Quentin Grimes and Ty Jerome. Cavs, Suns and Philly dont have capspace due to their salaries we can get these guys. FVV no way I'd take him for more than 20M a year. Like Quentin Grimes is better in every way.
Re-sign FVV to a more team friendly deal. Sign Naz Reid. Trade the bloat (Brooks, Green, Tari to either the Suns for Booker or Lakers for Reaves).
Only one that really matters is Fred's option. Pick it up and trade him plus Whitmore and the 2025 pick for an upgrade. Sadly from Ime's interview it seems like he's a lock to return. My guess is they bring him back at $22m per season. I love Adams but if we can sign and trade him that would be best. We need the backup 5 to either be a rim runner or a stretch 5 so that we don't need so many offensive rebounds.
Game 7 aside, Fred showed his enormous worth to this team in the last week. He had some monstrous performances. We need more Fred’s.
If we could pair Ausar with Amen it might be over for the league. Ausar has a more developed shooting form and could easily overtake Jalen's role.
All Fred had to do is play average for me to be okay. But the season I just witnessed was decidedly below average. I think he’s one of those guys that may already be starting to decline. I don’t trust his health. He can’t push the pace, which undercuts our athletic advantage. I just think we can do better and we deserve better. He got his money, he didn’t earn it this year, I consider him a last resort.
It would need to be more than that...but if the adage of the team that gets the best player wins the trade....the Rockets win that trade.
I wonder if Detroit fans daydream about bringing Amen there. I just don't see the fit or it happening.
My brother thats because Fred is being utilized incorrectly. Fred is supposed to be your second option who hits timely shoots and orchestrates the offensive periodically. Jalen Green hasn't developed any sort of consistency so we ended up relying on Fred to carry us for both guard positions. If you watched Games 4, 5 and 6 Fred was the only reason we even had a chance. He was hitting shots and passing the ball but once the warriors blitzed him we needed bum Jalen Green to show up.
