TF was the obsession with brown, puke green and nicotine yellow in the 1970’s?

Was looking at some old pictures and wtf…Which genius decided to decorate their lives in the colors of bodily fluids?

"avocado" was the name of that color

Our appliances were white, but blender/toaster/mixer/etc...all green

Oh, and everything that could had fake wood finish on it. Even cars.

Everytime I see 70s things it always smells of something gross and I associate it with the architecture and color scheme

what a disgusting time to be alive

I think it was an overreaction to day-glo in the 60's. They seem like reasonable parts of the color palate now, but look at the muted colors of the 50's and 40's - especially in places like public spaces that use cheaper non-trendy paints.

I think part of the appeal was also that they were closer to colors found in nature, which maybe in a disconnected intellectual way was very appealing philosophically at the time, but maybe not so much practically and in practice.

Music was insanely good and there were some groundbreakingly awesome movies. But overwhelmingly, my memories of that decade were of cigarette smoke @KingCheetah and child neglect.

I bought an investment house from the son of the original owner- it was built in the 1950s and had this hideous avocado green rug through the entire house. I pulled up the carpet and there was beautiful, perfect oak hardwood. Cabinets were brown, but they were really solid so I just had them painted white and put new hardware on them.

The same obsession people had with crazy pastels and neon in the 80s, big hair in the 60s, completely white kitchens with quartz counters that have one giant grey vein running through it and farmhouse kitchens the past few years, and the entire house looking like 10 shades of grey or greige before that, etc. Hell, even wood paneling and shiplap walls are making a comeback! Down the road people will laugh at all this but in the moment we are all slaves to "trends". lol.

I agree there were muted colors in the 50s, but I think a lot of the dullness is because so many tv shows from that time we watched in the decades after were in black & white. Not many people get a good idea of what the 50s design was like. Growing up in the 80's, I never even considered the 50s colors. They were just black & white to me because of old tv shows I watched. They had a lot of color in design, but like you said, a bit muted in most cases (though there are lots of exceptions). I love 50's suits, hats, dresses, etc., though. One of the coolest times for fashion, and a lot of it is timeless whereas the fashion from "my era" the 80's is painful to look at now. LOL.

Fun fact: the kitchen in the OP was used to make the body of the Family Truckster.

I just want times were we were not tethered to a device at all times, only landlines. If you couldn't catch me at the house you were just going to have to wait or come find me at the usual hangout spots. Also, glad we're not having cigarettes everywhere, mine more of an 80's issue than the 70's but still.

This was only 4 years ago in the Paris airport. Keeping the 60's and 70's vibes kicking

I miss the car colors and painted mural vans of the 70's. It was fun and unique. Now I get on the road and it's boring as hell with almost every vehicle being colorless. Almost everything is black, white, silver, and gray. Boring. Sure you get occasional reds, blues, and others, but you don't see cool murals on vans, or a big variety of colors or cool and funny stickers all over vehicles either.

Any old-timers like me probably remember road trips being a time when you saw really cool painted murals on vans, and people covering their vehicles and campers with bumper stickers of vacation spots, peace signs, flowers, and interesting stuff. It broke up the monotony of a long drive across country.

Toyota is the outlier with some really bold colors. I love the bright orange they introduced for their trucks and 4Runners a couple years ago. I have a blue FJ and my wife has a red 4Runner. Part of the reasoning is to stand out so you don’t get slammed on the road. My wife drove this road colored van for a few years and she got rear ended 3 times.

You can still see the vans you’re describing in more left-leaning areas, especially out West. Texas is just too conservative for that to be a trend in most places.

I can hear a song on the radio from the 70's and it takes me right back to riding my bike with my friends around Bellaire (before the McMansions), drinking out of the water hose, and my dad taking me to Oiler/Astro games at the Dome and Rocket games at The Summit. Section 102, Row E, Seats 1 & 2. And going to see Star Wars movies at the Meyerland Theatre.

My wife thinks I'm too nostalgic but I don't think that's possible.
