I'm only 34 so David Carr was the first I seen get drafted.

Don't kill me for this but I don't remember the Oilers. I only remember them leaving and I became a Cowboys fan.

I remember the Haywood and Highsmith draft but I was young, my grandpa was excited.
Would say I really got into draft around McNair year in 95

I remember the Oilers taking Ray Childress #3 in the 1985 draft. I was 9. He was great, but could have had hof Chris Doleman at #4.

In the same draft Oilers took DB Richard Johnson #12. Could have had Jerry Rice at #16.

Mario Williams in 2006. Little did I know, the guy Texans selected in 2nd round in that draft was the one.

I was too young and disconnected from the NFL to follow the Oilers before they moved to Tennessee.

I remember pretty much every draft since Carr, our inaugural 1st overall pick.

My very favorite was Andre Johnson because he looked like THE MAN, coming out, and turned out to be that and so much more.

Liked/loved the Oilers, but too young to care about actual drafts during that time - and Houston had no team in my late teens.

So I guess my first player in OP's scenario would be......

I watched him at his HS State Championship game at the Astrodome. Just a coincidence he went to my parents HS, Tyler John Tyler as it was known then. I honestly don't remember them televising the draft then because it was so many rounds. I seem to remember just watching crawlers to find out who was drafted and reading about it in the newspaper. I grew up during the AFL/NFL signing wars before they merged and consolidated the draft.

Probably George or McNair. I was a big fan but don't remember much about the draft before then.

Lorenzo White. I watched the Oilers time expire on the clock before they finally drafted him. I wanted them to draft Thurman Thomas.

Didn't watch it but Earl was the first draft pick I remember being excited about. I would have been 11.
