I hate trump but I want what's best for this country. If somehow this stunt works and we get complete free trade with other countries, then that's the best I can hope for at this moment. At the same time, no one will trust us ever again..

After the bogus charts, I’m not sure I believe them.

I mean factual charts would have worked. But what he’s peddling is the biggest game of chicken.

The best you could hope for?? What else do you want? Global nuclear war? If Trump pulls this off, it will be one of the grandest charades of my life.

At what cost? Risking global recession is not something that should be used as leverage. If this doesn't work out, we are all F'ed

It's exactly a game of chicken. He needs everyone to think he is willing to create a global recession if he doesn't get what he wants. It's like KIm Jung Un wanting everyone he is willing to start a nuclear war.

    Lol good news. Bad news.
It isn't going to work. But we will be fine. Nobody buys American goods.

If there were no global tariffs, the U.S. would still have a large trade imbalance in goods. But that does not seem to be the real focus here. Trump and many in his circle appear to have a goal of completely eliminating the trade deficit in goods, as if that alone defines fair trade.

There are others in the administration who want better trade agreements but take a broader view. They recognize that trade includes more than just goods. It also involves services, intellectual property, and foreign investment. Still, that broader perspective seems to be getting ignored.

The approach now looks like an attempt to make imports so expensive that they shrink drastically. That is the "pain" this administration is referring to. They expect prices to rise sharply, but believe that this will eventually bring manufacturing back to the U.S., from cheap items to advanced electronics.

They think we will start to see results in the second half of this year. Maybe that will happen. But if it does, prices will remain high, the U.S. will be more isolated, we will keep losing talent, and the long-term effect will be a weaker, not stronger, economy.

Still, some people may feel reassured that the U.S. can do everything on its own and will not have to rely on others. If a major war ever breaks out with China, maybe they believe we will be able to build military-grade iPhones on the spot.

I can tell you with 1000% confidence that this is not going to happen in the second half of the year or literally ever

We are not going to replace the sorghum farms in Kansas with Banana plantatons & coffee farms.

AWS data centers are not going to turn into toaster factories.

Dry cleaning plants that clean clothes for service workers are not going to turn into t shirt factories

This is not going to happen in the second half of the year. Nor will or should it EVER happen - one would have to be a complete idiot to pursue this course of action

There is no actual plan, it's just rationalizing the stupidity of a total ****ing senile moron - his feckless piece of **** human advisers going on the Sunday shows trying to explain otherwise doesn't mean ****.

I think one of the biggest misconceptions is that the tariffs will bring back jobs. We are not bringing back high intense manual labor jobs. What we are trying to do is increase net exports. Why do we need Ireland if we have zero tariffs between us and Europe? Bring that money back to the US. Also, we start H1B's top talented manufacturing people from all around the world.

The vast majority of people in the United States doesn't understand how needlessly difficult it is to get American made parts. We have a highly incompetent workforce who thinks a massive subscription to Salesforce fixes all their problems. MBA's are stupid. Ship them to china. Europe is worse. Utter chaos. China on the other hand ... they can follow spec

She raises both sides of the argument without realizing it.

If her biz did pick up, either amzn or temu would've broken her moat, like they will with dropshippers, anyways. Brick n mortar is lowkey appreciating closing the $800 small packages loophole. They're still boned.

Just a reminder - life in 1880 sucked - solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.

Trying to recreate that is insanity.

...but I could buy an oil lamp for a buck fifty and a box of matches was only $0.10.

You don't have to like Trump to look at the current situation before the tariffs and realize we where getting bad deals across the board wile also being the biggest and strongest economy. China can't sell their $hit unless we buy it, without us their is a massive and I mean massive reset in the world economic stage. The way things were was only going to get worse and worse, sure you don't upset anyone and its safe but what Trump is doing needed to be done...

I don't like Biden but if he would have done this I would have been very impressed and would have had my support, you don't have to like someone to understand that what they are doing is good in the long run and necessary.....

I'm fully confident Trump will pull this off and to our benefit...

I don't know well Trump will pull it off, but at least he's trying to confront a problem head on.

If he fails, people will vote in a boring guy that says all the right things, pump up welfare for those 50% by issuing more debt, and corporate media will browbeat you into liking it because...stimmies and overpriced assets!!!
