Astros crushing loss to the Mets in 1996 The Oilers crushing losses to the Bills, Broncos.......in the playoffs The Rockets crushing losses to the Sonics, Jazz... in the playoffs The "Houston Oilers )" losing to the Rams in the Super bowl short just one yard; as well as losing to the Raiders and Patriots in recent years in the playoffs. And now this. Up 3-2 and losing two back-to-back crushing games, with having one of the greatest pitchers of all time pitching game 7. In my opinion, Houston is the toughest city to be a sports fan. But no matter how much the sports teams in this city continue to tease us with championship, I will still be a diehard Houston sports fan. I left Houston at a young age to Los Angeles, but have remained a diehard Houston fan. I could have become a Laker fan, a Dodgers/Angeles fan, Raiders fan, but no!!!! I am proud to be Houston fan no matter the heatache their teams bring us. Maybe if Beltran resigns, as well as Oswalt, Berkman, and Clemens and with a healthy Pettite and Miller we can contend next year with a mission, and do what the Cardinals did this year and win 100+ games and go to the world series.
More sports memories: Losing in the playoffs with Hakeem, Barkely, Drexler never healthy at the same time. Watching Hakeem retire.
Marital advice: A woman should always marry a man who has won a championship. I've been content since the Rockets of 94. It doesn't hurt anymore. Disappointing. But I'm not damaged.
I'd have to agree that Houston seems to be heartbreak city, but living in Philadelphia a few years there is some fans out there that can commiserate. Phillies always underachieve, Eagles have never won it all and lost three NFC championship games in a row, Sixers losing to Shaq after a great run a few years back, Flyers/Lightning last year, and even poor St. Joes behind Jameer Nelson losing on a dagger 3 pointer after the whole city was buzzing about them last year. Still nothing can touch that Oiler/Bill game nothing
We played the Mets in 1996? Uh...this didn't affect Houston fans in the least... Sorry, but last night doesn't fall in the same catagory. We didn't "choke" like some of those other situations. The cards have the best record in baseball. How is losing to them in 7 games (with a 3 man starting rotation and 1 man bullpen) choking? Oh, one more thing. I'd rather live in Houston than some city that never even competes for a championship. Milwaukee- What have the Bucks or Brewers done lately? Pitsburgh- Steelers haven't won a Superbowl since the 70's and the Pirates will NEVER be any good. Indianapolis- Colts and Pacers came close but neither has ever won anything. Philadelphia- no championships for any of their teams since the early 80's. Cleveland- It's Cleveland, no explanation needed. Cincinnati- Reds and Bengels, enough said.
This city has 2 rings! If we didn't have those, last night's loss would have been tougher. But after our back to back, I pity other cities more. Last night was just the nature of sports. We've got 3 great sports teams that are bound to bring in a few wins over the next 10 years, so why stress?
There are much worse cities to be a sports fan in right now: Atlanta Philladelphia (how will the Eagles dissapoint them this year?) New York (besides the Yankees, the Mets, Nets, Knicks, Jets, Giants, have all found new ways to dissapoint fans over the last 10 years). Cleveland Los Angeles Seattle Phoenix DALLAS Minneapolis (provided the T-Wolves continue to be the NBA version of the Astros) Houston actually has a rare feat of having three franchises on the rise (even if the Astros just peaked).
we might not have beeen the better team.. but anytime you have one of the top 10 pitchers in history on the mound.. you should win the game
I remember reading the next day about a guy who got arrested after the game was over. He was so mad he shot his TV. It's tough being a Houston sports fan, true. But I think the heartbreak only makes the loyalty connection between the fans and the players more special.
The Astros remain one of only six teams to never advance to the World Series. That undistinguished list of franchises includes the Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the team formerly known as the Montreal Expos.
This was probably our best and most realistic chance yet to make it to the World Series. It's not easy....especially if your an Astros fan. Who knows when we will get a chance again? Just as noone expected the Astros to make a run...you cannot say give me this line-up and we will be back in the same position next year. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way due to all the variances caused by other factors, whether that be injuries, lousy play, or whatever. This team had "it" and didn't get "it" done...unfortunately. I think we were better than St. Louis. We just didn't make the right decisions, missed some key plays, and hit the ball right at people. We could all be dead before we are in this position again.
We've actually been able to watch 3 of the greatest pitchers of all time pitch for our team. Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, and now The Rocket.
ima.. that's true.. although I am 21 so dont' really remember Nolan as an Astro.. that Randy season was magical to see him..
Why are you forgetting the AEROS? Why are you forgetting the RICE OWLS? Aren't you happy the Astros made it this far??? I'm happy. look!->
Right now I would say Atlanta and Chicago. Atlanta has a heartbreak every year in the baseball playoffs, the Hawks are a disgrace to the NBA, and the Falcons are just a one man show. Chicago had fun with the Bulls when they won 6 rings but after that the Bulls have been terrible,WhiteSox suck, Cubs suck, and the Bears suck.
I completely disagree. This has been a GREAT city for the past decade. Two Rockets titles, two Comets titles, a few Astros division titles and playoff appearances, a brand spanking new NFL team and three (count 'em THREE!!!) new stadiums. On top of that, look at the list of marque names that our teams have landed: Clyde Drexler Charles Barkley Randy Johnson Scottie Pippen Steve Francis Yao Ming Roger Clemens Andy Pettitte Tracy McGrady I challenge anyone to find another city with a record like that since 1994.
